Squirrel Girl on TV? Marvel Developing New Warriors Comedy Series

This is nuts: Marvel and ABC Studios are developing a New Warriors comedy series that would put the spotlight on little-known comic book heroine Squirrel Girl, TVLine has learned exclusively. Both Marvel and ABC Studios declined to comment, but sources confirm that the half-hour project is currently being shopped around to cable and streaming outlets.

Described as the junior version of The Avengers, the New Warriors are a superhero squad made up of teenagers, one of whom would include Doreen Green (aka Squirrel Girl). For the record, SG can do more than just communicate with the world’s vast squirrel population; she also possesses super-speed and strength.

Squirrel Girl — who in the comics would go on to serve as the nanny to Luke Cage and Jessica Jones’ daughter — made headlines recently when Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick expressed a desire to play the cheeky character on the big screen, telling Net A Porter, “My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should. I don’t know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!” (Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo in turn said Kendrick would be “perfect casting.”)

I honestly have no idea how to react to this. I like Squirrel Girl, so I'll try to give this a shot.

Is this suppose to be live action or a cartoon?

TheSkeletonMan939 08-30-2016 06:13 PM

I would actually watch this.

Haha, YES! The Marvel Cinematic Universe is really getting BIG now. :D

Now all we need are a Captain Britain tv series and X-Men-related shows set in the MCU.

Marvel.... stop!

Agreed.

Not interested.

The fact Squirrel Girl is gonna be seen on TV, I don't think we'll see her appear in any of the MCU movies, since Marvel TV and Marvel Studios are doing there own separate things.

She's already been seen on tv. She had a cameo in an ep of the last Fantastic Four series plus her recurring role in Ultimate Spider-Man. This'll just be her first top billing role tv wise.

I don't see this being a big deal. Squirrel Girl is yet another example of Marvel's increasingly unfunny tumblr clickbait characters given way too much importance and the fact it's a half-hour s*itcom just shows how terribly mismanaged and directionless non-Netflix Marvel output continues to be.

The pitch just sounds bad. I can see a show about Squirrel Girl or some version of the New Warriors, but not the two of them sandwiched together.

NinjaPug 04-05-2017 07:41 AM

Show was picked up for a 10 episode first season

So the Showrunner worked on Scrubs, so that's good. The synopsis sounds.... meh:

Quote:

New Warriors revolves around about six young people with powers living and working together. With powers and abilities on the opposite end of the spectrum of The Avengers, the New Warriors want to make a difference in the world ... even if the world isn't ready. With Freeform focused on a group dubbed "becomers" — those experiencing a series of firsts in life including first loves and first jobs — New Warriors explores the journey into adulthood, except in this world, they're not quite super and not yet heroes and the guys can be as terrifying as bad dates.

I wonder if they will end up doing a reality show and causing the Stanford Disaster....

Well it's either that, or they have to admit they can't watch a show unless the protagonist looks just like them.
