British government hospitals to bar smokers & overweight people from surgery, budget

Smoker? Overweight? There's no room in the budget for your operation.

"In the rest of the economy, when a product or service is too expensive, businesses have the incentive to figure out how to deliver it less expensively. Think how much high-definition TVs cost when they first came out—tens of thousands of dollars—compared to today, when Amazon sells dozens of models for under $100. That economic incentive—to deliver better services with higher quality and lower costs—only exists in the private sector."

Here's one that's not behind a pay/adblock wall.

Hospital leaders in North Yorkshire said that patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above – as well as smokers – will be barred from most surgery for up to a year amid increasingly desperate measures to plug a funding black hole. The restrictions will apply to standard hip and knee operations.

The decision, described by the Royal College of Surgeons as the “most severe the modern NHS has ever seen”, led to warnings that other trusts will soon be forced to follow suit and rationing will become the norm if the current funding crisis continues.
Blame the Tory Government, and their increasing drive to defund the NHS.
And then...stop smoking.

Thank you, PC!

The Tories wants to get rid of the NHS. They've been responsible for around 100k deaths of disabled people with the Fit For Work changes, so I'm not surprised they're after more people to **** over.

Of course... more funding, because the thing that corrupt, inefficient, wasteful government needs more of, is even more money.

This is England we're talking about, not the United States. So why are you posting a video with Uncle Sam?

...

No wait, never mind. I don't care.

The NHS isn't perfect, but it's a great deal better than what the United States currently has or will ever have.

At least in its previous incarnation. Before the I've Got Mine Eff You capitalists took over.

This is not a new thing btw, there have been conditions and requirements attached to a number of various procedures and surgeries for a while now, in regards to smoking and weight loss. My mother gave up smoking and lost some weight before her hip replacement, and that was over ten years ago.
