Rest in Peace Tom Petty

Tom Petty, Rock Iconoclast Who Led the Heartbreakers, Dead at 66

Quote:

Tom Petty, the dynamic and iconoclastic frontman who led the band the Heartbreakers, died Monday. He was found unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest at his Malibu home Sunday night, according to TMZ, and rushed to the hospital and placed on life support. EMTs were able to find a pulse when they found him, but TMZ reported that the hospital found no brain activity when he arrived. A decision was made to pull life support. CBS confirmed Petty's death. He was 66.

For a guy that didn't back down, hopefully he learned to fly.

I did like his statement as to why he wouldn't quit playing with the group.

Way to young to die. I almost couldn't believe it when I read the thread title. His music is absolutely amazing and was like a soundtrack to my late teens early twenties. RIP man.

Jeez, depressing week.

I've loved Petty ever since I was a little kid, Dad liked to play his greatest hits on road trips. My uncle was a HUGE fan, I'm sure he's very bummed right about now.

I wonder if he relapsed. Last I heard, he'd gotten clean.

Wonderful, unforgettable, & irreplaceable, grew up with his music, will never stop listening to it.
Now that it's been made official I will say, keep rocking in heaven Tom Petty.

Reports say cardiac arrest, so possibly?
Or the damage could just have already been done.

I know Rolling Stone did an article on him- I think it was last year- about his having cleaned/sobered up and he looked much better than he had before. Sad if it didn't stick.

The man had a cardiac arrest, has no brain activity, and a DNR.

His heart may still be beating, but the man we knew as Tom Petty is dead.

Shark_Blade 10-02-2017 06:57 PM

So he's dead now? No idea who he is until Stephen King tweeted about him.

Well, I guess I was wrong.

You shouldn't always rely on social media for news and updates.

Anyways, I wish the family well.

Tom Petty was incorrectly reported dead because CBS reported the wrong information. I do not see how he can pull through this being rain dead from a likely massive heart attack. Let the sounds of the Heartbreakers tunes play as a vigil for him in hopes he can pull through nonethless. Petty was so close to pulling the curtain on his character and enjoying the twilight of his life. Such a shame.

I've seen them mentioned interchangeably a lot today, so I looked them up just to be sure.

A heart attack is not the same thing as cardiac arrest.

A myocardial infarction, ie a heart attack, is when the heart doesn't get enough blood because something is restricting blood flow. The heart continues to beat, though at less than capacity.

Cardiac arrest is when the heart suddenly stops beating due to malfunction.

Or as the site I went to phrased it:
Heart attack is a circulation problem, cardiac arrest is an electrical one.

And so goes another great legend.

Rest in peace, Tom Petty. You'll be dearly missed.

Personally, I think social media is one of the absolute worst places to get news. Most people seem to not be able to tell the difference between a legit source/news site and satire/conspiracy theory/“fake” news. At least main stream news has an editing process. It isn’t perfect (CBS dropped the ball big time here) but its way better if you can learn to take it with a grain of salt and curious mind.

Anyways rest well Tom Petty. Loved your music.
