Is TMNT Meme-able?

I mean Spongebob has been around for almost 20 years and we've seen a variety of memes coming out of Spongebob over the years gone viral.

But why is this not happening to TMNT? Is it not as universal? It's been around even longer than Spongebob.

Sonic has viral memes.

Others have too like Power Rangers,

Star Trek,

and even freaking He-man has a meme (eventhough I don't know the show).

TMNT started in the 80's and 90's and the height of its fandom pre-dated the internet. While the kids who grew up with Nick's TMNT will be part of meme culture, the original fanbase was already adults before the internet became a thing.

I guess you "younger fans" don't know what the world was like when there was little to no internet, when we had no social media, no youtube or streaming media, when we were just "forum dwellers" and that's all it was. It was the wild west, we didn't know what the word "meme" was.

Oh you young kids of today. Back in my day it took 10 minutes just to load and watch a 2 minute video on quicktime or realplayer and 5 minutes just for a single picture to load.

I guess the closest thing to a "meme" has just been the clip of Shreeka reacting to her power ring melting...

I dunno, I guess we could get on that, since it's probably going to need to be fans that do it, but it doesn't look like Turtle fans are too eager to meme them.

That said though, if anyone has any stuff they've done, I encourage them to post it. :D (Although a challenge to create some could be fun too.)

Lets make our own tmnt memes!

Papenbrook 03-09-2018 09:47 PM

Well, there's this one ...

sdp 03-09-2018 09:47 PM

Well I guess turtle faces are not too memeable like say 80s He-Man was. But still we've seen OT April in a few memes from time to time and the drome has used for a few years that triple headpalm.

Powder 03-09-2018 10:06 PM

There's way more potential than people see in it, based on how few there are. I guess it'd be cool if we came up with one that somehow got popular.

We had a thread in the fanworks section with a few originals in it that were decent, but they're definitely dated nowadays.

Utrommaniac 03-09-2018 10:11 PM

That...probably wouldn't really count as a meme...you can't really do much with it.

IndigoErth 03-09-2018 10:16 PM

Hate to say it but... Only one I've run across a bunch of times and could think of off the top of my head...

Anyone ever take a shot of 1990 movie Mikey on the payphone and give it the old "No, this is Patrick Mikey" line? I'd throw it together, but can't find a pic in a halfassed attempt before going to bed.

Utrommaniac 03-09-2018 10:20 PM

The next best thing I can think of is how many ways the "Look what they did to my shell!" bit when the Neutrinos scraped up Raphael when they were first introduced.

Spoiler:
"Look what they did to my ship"
"Look what they did to MY SPAGET"
[Image of Donatello getting his shell smashed]

Whaaat... that's irrelevant because as I mentioned even old shows like Star Trek and He-man have memes in current time. We just have to be creative about it.

Yeah let's share tmnt memes! :tgrin:

Now that I thought about it... I suddenly realized that I did a meme of Raph's femme face and turned it into a Vogue magazine cover before :D :

I've long thought this image of Krang is perfect for meme material.

Appropriate for relating to shock or displeasure. Either for the poster's perspective or poking fun at Krang, depending on the context.

Examples:

It ended up being too fun making captions and I had to stop myself.

Hah, I've got that image saved too, along with a gif of it. :tlol:

Looked through my crazy saved pics and gifs last night, but can I think of anything to use them as it another story... Maybe eventually.

Sumac 03-10-2018 06:34 PM

Original series have ended to early to become meme material and it seems 2K3 and 2K12 were not in the cultural spotlight enough to get some worthy memes.

Also, thanks for that Krang image - it's my favorite image of his from OT and this is what I sometimes have in mind when I am confused. :tlol:

Every property has meme potential, really. TMNT is so big now, with so many different universes/versions that the possibilites are endless.

Tbh things such as the Bay films, TNM and Coming Out of Their Shells are big memes by themselves already.

There is difference between memes born out of project and projects itself being memes.
Besides, all listed above are negative memes. No-one will remember or use them, except when they need to remember lows of the franchise.

TMNT is known, but somehow it managed to evade being in cultural spotlight after OT, which usually directly brings some memes. Most likely, because, all of the later projects were not especially good nor very bad or not wacky enough in the eyes of the majority.
