Irma's last name: Langinstein or Margrat?

In the 1987-1996 series, Irma's last name is never mentioned. However, it is often said to be Langinstein. But I've also heard or Margrat.

What's correct? Was anything made official?

neatoman 10-01-2017 02:36 PM

Magrat? Sure you're not confusing Irma for this chick?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's Langinstein

Original TMNT Cartoon Fan 10-01-2017 02:44 PM

Margrat

Here's at least one source that says Margrat:

Often said? By whom? Maybe I've been living under a rock but this is the first time I've heard this.

It's only ever been Langenstein as far as I know. If Margaret was ever in there it may have been as her middle name, but I personally have no memory of that being the case.

IndigoErth 10-01-2017 03:36 PM

I've never heard of the Margaret name. Knew it was Langinstein long ago though... are we sure it's never mentioned?

oldmanwinters 10-01-2017 07:46 PM

I think it's ridiculous how some fan wikis list April's middle name as "Harriet" as an official part of continuity, sometimes across every continuity of the franchise. All because it was mentioned as a throw-away gag in "Leatherhead, Terror of the Swamp." I can't remember if Irma's last name was ever mentioned in any episode, but I have accepted the Langinstein designation in my own mind.

Well what can begin as a throwaway gag can become canon in franchises, hell "fanon" which are non-canon facts mostly regarded canon by the fandom have also become canon.

Unless it was in Red Sky or those European vacation episodes... I honestly do not remember Irma's last name ever being mentioned.

Roseangelo 10-01-2017 11:34 PM

Irma's last name was definitely never mentioned in the series.

Agreed.
So where are you guys getting Langinstein from?? :-?

Ninjinister 10-02-2017 01:41 AM

Might've been something that someone made up once upon a time that stuck and everyone assumes was legit.

I just always assumed it was one of those millions of details I'd forgotten.

At least you hear the name Harriet in the FW series once. You NEVER hear Langinstein or Margrat. Where is everyone getting those names from?!

Wasn't that what happened with Brock and Misty? They seem to be called Slate and Waterflower respectively by fans sometimes.

Well the last name isn't on the toy card either. Where the hell did that come from then? Archie?

Hmm... perhaps IMDb is to blame? At least the speculation seems to have preceded the rise of Wikipedia:

I don't think it ever showed up in Archie, because Irma only appeared in issues 3-4 (episode adaptation) and was way off-model from the cartoon.

I asked David, not sure if he'll respond. He mostly never does. :-?

EDIT: Okay wasn't expecting that. David replied to me via Facebook. He said I could quote his responses as well. I asked him what Irma's surname was and his response was:

"I don't think she ever had one. It probably got mentioned in some obscure episode somewhere (maybe not even one of mine), but I have no memory of it."

David wrote the first episode she was in so I wondered if he created her character. He didn't answer that but he did clarify whether Langinstein is her surname:

I am almost 100% certain she never had THAT particular name.

Then said:

If her last name was ever mentioned in an episode I'm sure some fan would have made note of it. My guess is we never gave her a last name because we never had to. I usually don't both with a last name unless it has to be used in dialogue. If I had created 007 he would have been just "James!"

He also pointed to where he got the name Irma from:

Hope that's helpful guys. :)
