The Metal Music Thread

I've noticed there's a sizable amount of users who are into Metal here in the 'Drome. And since there isn't a thread to talk about one of my favorite genres, I decided to make this one.

So, where shall I begin? Metal... I got into it when I was a teenager around 2008. I had listened to several songs and bands of its various sub-genres as a kid, but didn't really get into it until I was 17-18. Carrying on, I immediately fell in love with Iron Maiden's and Metallica's classic stuff. Then I went on to Megadeth, Slayer, Black Sabbath, Testament, Anthrax, Kreator, Pantera, Sodom, Morbid Angel and Death later. Didn't actually get into Judas priest until like 2012. As silly as this songs, the song Breaking the Law turned me off from them and I just couldn't grasp why it was so popular and praised.

Nowadays I listen to more genres, but obviously still enjoy Metal.

Favorite bands? Already mentioned a bunch of them above, but I'd like to add Týr, Finntroll, Blind Guardian, Crimson Glory, Bolt Thrower, Baphory, Sepultura, Eluveitie, Equillibrium, Manowar... and **** that, the list goes on AND ON. There's no way I can remember every single one of them. You get my point

Now, when it comes to sub-genres, I took a quick liking to thrash metal, but as I got older I began enjoying death and folk metal more. I must admit I'm not big into black metal, though. But not many are, so I defintiely dont' feel alone on this one.

So, what about you? What's your story in the Metal genre? Your favorite bands, genres, etc? Your turn, now.

I have niche taste in metal. I hate screaming, but I love the instruments and riffs. I'm mostly into symphonic metal myself. Within Temptation is my #1 band. Love their stuff. Sharon den Adel is the most amazing voice I've ever heard.

Halestorm is probably my #2 band... Lzzy's great.

I also love finding metal covers of pop songs. I've got some great Metal-ized Lady Gaga and Katy Perry on my phone...

(And yes, I resurrected this thread. Conversation is spilling over from a different location so why not see if this goes somewhere?)

Witchfinder General is good sh*t indeed. Even AVGN digs 'em 8)

Metallica and Megadeth were 2 of my favorites growing up, Disturbed, Godsmack, Killswitch, throw some older Korn in there...good times. As far as metalcore and all that, Asking Alexandria (before they changed singers), Bullet, All That Remains are always a good listen.

Black Sabbath
Motorhead
Cannibal Corpse
Dying Fetus
Beneath The Massacre
Necrophagist
Electric Wizard
Death Devil
Babymetal
Danzig
Implosive Disgorgence
Black Dahlia Murder
Korn (bit of a guilty pleasure)

I've listened to a lot of metal bands over the years but these are the main ones that are still in regular rotation. I've seen a bunch of acts live, Dying Fetus & Ozzy included, but also Horse The Band, Cattle Decapitation, Between The Buried & Me, & many many more. Death metal is my favorite in the genre, blast beats, guttural vocals, etc. I much prefer punk to metal, though some of the groups I favor have metal leanings, like the later work of The Misfits & The Exploited, for example. Nintendocore is my sh*t too.

Well, wren't Metal bands in the 70s called Punk Rock bands at times?

Horse the Band? Aren't they the ones who did that weird cover of the FW theme song?
Electric Wizard is good.

I've still got a ringing in my hear from that GnR/Metallica/Faith No More show in the 90s. And I can't get enough Tool.

(and yes, that is what SHE said.)
:D

Prowler 08-31-2016 01:10 PM

Never saw Metallica live despite them coming here pretty much every year. I know people who have seen them in the last decade and said their concerts are pretty underwhelming and they pretty much only play 90s and 2000s stuff. I guess they've truly sold out.

Meanwhile, everyone loves Iron Maiden concerts. I loved the one I went to in 2013, even though I was bummed they didn't play Hallowed Be Thy Name.

I don't get it? I see no possible sexual innuendo in there? Unless "tool" is just another slang term for "dick"?

Anyone else a fan of Eric Calderone?

myconius 09-28-2016 10:08 PM

pretty much anything from Black Sabbath before Ozzy left,
or Ozzy's first 2 albums with Randy Rhodes.

Judas Priest up to about Defenders of the Faith

early Iron Maiden

pretty much any era of Danzig (even his industrial techno stint)

Mercyful Fate

King Diamond

Type O Negative

Megadeth .....LOTS an' LOTS Megadeth!!!

Sepultura was awesome up until Max left.
Soulfly had a few good songs, Cavalera Conspiracy as well.

once in a rare while i enjoy listening to stuff like Korn
though i usually prefer something with a bit more melody and harmonies.

if you ever get the chance, check out the instrumental stuff on King Diamond's album 'Abigail'.

'Peace Sells . . . But Who's Buying?'

that remains my ALL time favorite Megadeth as well as one of my top favorite albums in general! :D

then i'd say it's a Toss up between 'Rust in Peace' and 'So Far, So Good, So What!'

'Killing is my Business', 'Countdown to Extinction', 'Youthanasia' all have some really awesome songs as well. :)

though one song i absolutely LOVE is the one they did for the Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey soundtrack. :D

that's a song i can listen to over and over on auto-repeat! :D

Prowler 09-29-2016 02:59 PM

Peace Sells and Rust in peace for me. And by that I mean the originals. The remasters are pretty lousy, especially RIP's. Jesus, how could they have f*cked up the remasters so badly? Five Magics' remastered version sounds awful.

I've liked a couple of the most recent Megadeth albums. Dystopia and Endgame are pretty solid records. Now that Metallica are basically dead, Mustaine won't be trying to mirror them any longer.

yeah, those 2 albums really are the best ones!!

OH YEAH! i forgot all about those hideously AWFUL remasters!! must have blocked them from my memory! :P
i agree 100% especially about Five Magics . . . . .

Spoiler:
that line about "he who lives by the sword..."

. . . . . the demonic sounding echo was butchered beyond recognition.

that reminds me, i never picked up their new album yet.

hahahaha! yeah! Metallica have long since flown the way of the gooney bird!

Dave Mustaine even admits he screwed up that song badly in the remaster, hiring Satan to sing that part in the original song and Fat Albert in the remastered version.
