This is the very reason why the new TMNT series was aimed at a younger audience. The 2012 series went a little dark. And Nickelodeon felt uncomfortable with the direction that show went. That they created a new series more in line with there demographic.

there's family friendly movies targeting a wider age range and then toons on kids channels.
