Maybe. Though the influence wasn't entirely shed back then either. But thankfully we didn't have to deal with an episode at a time showing off some variant armor we'd never see again because it was part of the toy line (and man, do I remember some of the stuff that came with the toys, it would have made the show
ridiculous).
