What? Why would #1 be one of the two only options? 50 years forward, like twice as long as between the first two trilogies? Why? #2, the opposite -- recast the original characters and pick up where Return of the Jedi left off... and have no gap at all between trilogies? Weird!
#3 was the soundest of the doors... she just needed to not do a remake and actually have at least a very basic plan for the trilogy, not made up on the fly.

Agreed. #3 was a good plan, it has just been very poorly executed.
And everybody knew from Day One that Han Solo would be killed off... Harrison Ford wanted him dead in
