It makes sense. Every generation of consoles lasts around 6 years.
I think they purposely release the basic models first just to release the "improved" versions (slims/Pro/One X etc.) later. It's very obvious they hold back making 1 true model to begin with.
Started with the PS2 and PSOne but I don't think that was done on purpose. It was more of a novelty since they had no real upgrades.
