I quit soda cold turkey a year or two ago. I tried the "slowly diluting fruit juice until I was only drinking water" trick but it didn't work out for me, but when I stopped getting soda and juice and just shoved some bottled water in the fridge instead, it wasn't very hard to make the switch. In fact it was a LOT easier than I thought it would be. And I say this as someone that loathed drinking water as a teenager, you could give me even the nastiest tasting soda and I'd still reach for it before the water. I get it bottled because the tap water here is rendered undrinkable.
So basically a gradual change didn't work but a sudden one did.
