"Head", the Monkees film from 1968. I'd never seen it before, despite being a huge fan. I'm so ashamed.
Completely brilliant and far ahead of its time. I'm neither shocked that A. It was universally panned upon its release, or B. That it's now considered a lost classic of its era.
A little bit Benny Hill, a little Monty Python, a little bit of Family Guy, somehow
, along with everything that made The Monkees great in general. Great stuff. Completely tragic that it took several decades for people to "get it", but that happens a lot.
I'm guessing self-parody wasn't something a lot of people were hip to back then. But it's masterful satire.
