It varies. There are several slots you can unlock armor for that change their appearances/stats, and there are color shaders you can unlock to change their color scheme, but there's also Premiere Skins that change the characters' full appearance, voice, intros, etc.
Like if you didn't want to play as Raiden but wanted a DC character, he has the Black Lightning premiere skin.
Or, for Hal Jordan, I believe most Lantern Corps have unlockable chest symbols, should you want to go for whatever Lantern Corps, but there's also a John Stewart Premiere Skin.
You can also unlock a few special moves to swap out for other characters.
