That's exactly it. I saw it coming from a mile away, since he looked exactly like Dark Leo from FF. But I guess they wanted younger viewers to understand who it was immediately upon the reveal. Wish they could have thought of something more clever to both conceal and later reveal his true identity.
That being said, it was still pretty freakish and unsettling even if it was silly looking.
