It's all about how it's handled and what you do with it after-the-fact. Barbara wasn't treated well in the original graphic novel -- even Alan Moore freely admits that -- but her development into Oracle made her a much better character in the long run.
But even the graphic novel didn't treat her as poorly as this movie seems to. The comic treated her as a plot device, but it didn't completely remove her dignity.
