Yes but 80s movies back then did keep putting blatant nostalgic references to the 80s in their movies. Most of those films weren't sold on nostalgia of the 70s for example. Self-referentialism is something from modern movie making and the problem is restraint. Selling a TV show or film on it's period setting feels somewhat shallow I feel.
