I don't think it necessarily has to be do or die. They just have to seal him away again, allowing him to go back to the background until the moment when the Pantheon finally takes center stage, bringing him back for the grand finale, at which point he can be destroyed for good. The Pantheon is the backbone of the the whole comic. When they go, the book goes too.
