A 40+ year old Mara Jane is going to support a new trilogy? Look how old Luke is in Episode 8, I'm sure his "lover" isn't going to be half his age.

But they could do things like... introduce "Old Mara Jade" in IX, reveal she has some history with Luke, then later on do "'Mara Jade': A Star Wars Story" with Sebastian Stan as Young Luke (or something) and a younger actress playing "Young Mara."

there goes cube and his ageism again.

but andrews idea could work as well. they really botched it up but not doing a retread of the thrawn story. it set the things up perfectly.

Of course it has to do with age, yes they can then do a spinoff movie with a new young actress cast as her, but that's still not going to be a big deal when the "present" incarnation of her is already pushing 50 or older.

I mean I wouldn't be against it, are we expected that Luke had NO love interest in the 30+ years he's been around despite crushing on Leia before he knew she was his sister? I'm sure Luke isn't a virgin at 50+ years old in Episode 8. He had to have some women in his life.

Who's to say Disney's version of Luke didn't have a long-term girlfriend like that other character Hamill is famous for playing?

Pretty much.

"Heyyyy faaans!! Whoooo likes Grand Admiral Thraaaaaawnnnn?"

But I mean, sh**, JJ does kind of need a hail mary about now. Like, they've wasted two entire movies, one on intro that proved meaningless, the next on filler... now he's got one movie to make it all gel PLUS reverse audience disdain after TLJ.

Though I'm not sure he can do everything he needs to do in IX AND make it a meaningful movie around Thrawn. If they wanted Thrawn, he should have been teased in TFA, full on shown in TLJ, and featured prominently in IX.

What's the point of introducing him in IX? I think the holdup for Zahn is the story group fleshing out the story of him and Ezra in the Unknown Regions after Rebels.

but that takes talent and time to plan. you can't do that if you want to churn out a movie every year, and especially if you want women to star front and center above all else! shame on you andrew, you know better than that ;o)

Do you honestly think putting Thrawn in IX would appease the people that weren't happy with VIII?

Me personally? No. I mean, yeah, if done right... but wow, that would take some doing in a single film. I just mean I can understand how a boardroom full of Disney execs would go, "What are fans bitching about more than anything? AH, losing the Thrawn trilogy!"

The problem is Thrawn in IX would just be a "see we care about fans" but one movie can't do him justice, especially after the mess that the sequel trilogy is. I'd rather they take the established new characters and do something fun and new with them, not all the new characters are awful, the setting has just been awful.

I'd rather see a Thrawn movie set after ROTJ but before Ep7 even if with a total different cast in another place of the galaxy or whatever to explain why Luke isn't there.

The trouble is, you do a big Thrawn trilogy after RotJ but before TFA... that makes the New Republic's absolute pacifistic stance in TFA make even less sense if they've been dealing with Imperial warlords like Thrawn for years. No need for a "Resistance" if the New Republic has been openly fighting Imperial remnants.

Spoiler:
There should be an announcement of Billy Dee Williams reprising his role as Lando Calrissian in Episode IX very soon.

Quote:
“We were asked by our original source to verify this with another independent source before we ran with it. We did that, confirming that this is indeed correct (and before anyone asks, we’re not going to name our sources because that’s not how this works). Filming on Episode IX starts next month, so expect to see official confirmation of this exciting casting very soon.”

Of course he'll be in it. He should have been in the last one.

i'm worried about this.

poor guy has not aged well. as far as mental health goes, I think. i'm shocked he was able to deliver a good performance in rebels. but voice and live action are two different things.
