Funko Savage World/Primal Age

Anybody collecting these?

For those unaware, they're almost (but not quite) 1:1 with the original He-Man scale. They're like a hair bigger but it's generally not noticeable, and they look GREAT on the shelf next to the He-Man stuff.

They've done Mortal Kombat, Thundercats, Horror Icons, and they recently started a line of DC figures in the same scale and style. MK and Thundercats characters retain their normal looks, but the DC and Horror figures are "reimagined" to fit more in line with He-Man, sort of a "Post-Apocalyptic Barbarian" aesthetic.

I originally picked up a Sub-Zero as a goof, but the more I messed with it, the cooler it seemed. Since then I've picked up a few, including Lion-O and Mumm-Ra, and the other day I picked up their Freddy Krueger. Visually, I think these guys are cool as hell, and I eventually plan to get all of them. Having a Lion-O that's in scale with my He-Man is incredible, for one thing, after a lifetime of wanting exactly that.

They do some playsets and stuff, too, like a Batcave that's very reminiscent of the old Castle Grayskull/Snake Mountain sets. Pretty spiffy!

There's some unfortunate quality control issues in a few figures, though. The Horror and MK ones were put together differently from the DC and Thundercats ones, and the latter sets apparently have REALLY bad luck with the legs breaking. Especially the DC ones, which are Amazon exclusives - the plastic itself apparently had a manufacturing flaw in the early waves of those figures, and we all know how "gentle" the people who ship packages are in handling them, so a lot of the DC ones shipped broken. Allegedly, newer shipments are having better luck, but it's partly why I didn't pick up any of the DC ones, yet. As is, Lion-O's leg pops off rather easily, but the peg is fine so I should be able to fix it up with some glue. On others, the pegs just plain snap off sometimes, and that's a real bummer. Again, word is that newer waves are doing better.

The MK and Horror figures use the same build as the old He-Man's, with the "rubber band" legs, so they have none of these issues, and generally feel a bit more "sturdy" than the Thundercats ones. They all LOOK great, though. Skeletor, Mumm-Ra, and Freddy make quite the sinister trio.

Altogether, I really do recommend them if you're a fan of the scale or "throwback" figures in general. At the very least, having a Lion-O that's (mostly) in scale with my He-Man was mandatory. Buyer beware with the DC and Thundercats, though; I might try and find the DC ones in good shape at the flea market, rather than risk having them be mishandled and broken during shipping, as so many others have had to deal with. Apparently the boxes arrive straight-up mangled most times, so it's no wonder the damn figures break, too. The MK and Horror ones, though, are put together much better and I haven't heard about these problems. They're easy to find at Target, FYE, GameStop, etc., for anywhere from $10-20. Popular characters like Lion-O tend to go towards the $20 range, but Kitana and Liu Kang seem to sit around for $10-12 in most places.

If you can find 'em in good shape, though, they're worth a look. I dig 'em a lot. Anybody else into these besides me?

Was that Target recently and saw the Horror figures in the adult collectors area by electronics and the DC ones along the Batcave in the regular toy section. I think they had all the DC ones aside from Joker.

The novelty is cute, but I'm not really a huge fan of the 5.5" Vintage Style figures so I don't collect any. But I can see the appeal for it if you're into that style of figures, especially with Super7 ramping this style up a lot with different licenses and the more Filmation accurate MOTU figures.

And recreating He-ro and Eldor is really cool of them doing.

Oh, rad! From what I was reading I hadn't heard about any store releases for the DC stuff. I'll keep an eye out, thanks! They didn't have any at Target over here the other day, but they might show up soon.

Thanks again!

My Target has NONE of that stuff, at least not yet.

All they had were some tin "DC Primal Age" collector's lunchboxes, but NO toys from it whatsoever.

They have a "Funko" section, but predictably it's 100% jammed with those ridiculous POP figures that I can't stand and fail to see the point of. Doesn't look like they've cleared any space for new product, either.

Guess I'll have to rely on Amazon, unless the FYE over here ends up with a few.

Picked up the Funko Liu Kang and Scorpion figures since they were on a Clearance sale at GameStop. Just need Kitana and my own Sub-Zero (my wife already has one but it's all "hers") to complete that wave.

I also picked up Leatherface at Target yesterday for the Horror set, since he was the only one they had. Still need Jason, Michael Myers, and Pinhead. Then Sslithe and Panthro from Thundercats and I'll be almost all caught up.

My Target finally got some of the DC Primal Age ones in, but I'm broke until payday so I could only stare.

They had Batman in both black and blue variants - lots of each - along with one each of Green Lantern and Wonder Woman. Hopefully I can pick up one of each this weekend, when I go back to pick up the TMNT NECA sets.

I didn't see any of the playsets like the Batcave or Ace the Bat-Hound, but this place is really stingy about getting those things because they don't generally sell well and take up a lot of shelf space.

These will be a nice change of pace on the shelves beside my army of mostly-similar DC figures. They're definitely niche but they have a very interesting look.

So these things didn't move an inch all week, so I was able to grab 'em.

The reviews for when they were Amazon-exclusives were pretty bad, but I assume they somehow were all mangled in shipping because none of the packaging on the ones at Target is busted and neither are any of the figures. Some of the legs still feel pretty stiff, and possibly brittle, which is an unfortunate commonality with this line in all its various forms. But for the most part, they look and feel great.

They fit in perfectly with the style of figure that inspired them...

They each have some cool weapons and accessories that totally fit the theme, and the style of "armor" and clothing fits great as well...

Standard six points of articulation - head, shoulders, waist, and hips, although I wouldn't mess with the hips too much, not that you really even need to - and the sculpts are cool. Batman gets two weapons, sword and shield, and I like how they bothered to make the weapons match the different-colored armor on each variant. Wonder Woman gets a sword, shield, and lasso which clips onto her belt. Green Lantern gets the "win" for accessories with a battle axe, a mace, a shield, removable "Green Lantern" chain pendant, and removable shoulder and leg armor. My only real nitpick is that Wonder Woman's arm is positioned at an odd angle to hold her sword.

Hopefully Aquaman and the villains show up soon. I'm a little bit surprised at how big this line is already; most of Funko's 5.5-inch lines are about 4 or 5 figures and only one wave, but this one had eight figures (and one variant) in its first wave, and the second, Superman-centric wave has been out online for a while now, too. Looking forward to picking those up eventually.

Picked up Aquaman today. He looks pretty cool, but so far he's bringing up the rear as far as accessories. He has a hook for his left hand, but he only comes with a Trident for a weapon. I guess they felt since he had a hook hand there wasn't any need for another weapon or accessory.

His trident is a little bit too thin to fit in his hand snugly, but that's nitpicky.

These are cool, but the excessive detail and smoothness really sets them a part from actual MOTU. Like, they look too new- if that makes any sense?

I feel you. They still fit pretty well though. They're really a bit closer to the Sungold-style knock-off lines than the actual MOTUs but it's all pretty close.

Still no NECA TMNT at Target, but they DID have King Shark... and Ace The Bat-Hound! Score! I didn't think they'd bother with the beasts. Hopefully they'll get the Batcave, too, at some point.

They also had the Joker Beast but I'm trying to hold onto some money in case they get the TMNT sets in again this week, so I can at least get one or two.

Every day I go there, they have like 10 Batmans and then ONE new figure they didn't have the day before. Maybe they'll have Joker, Freeze or Scarecrow by the end of the week.

Doing my part to ensure they put out Wave Two, which I assume they will if these sell alright. That's the Superman wave!

I'm waiting until I finish eating dinner to open it. I like to savor these things.

One day him and Vintage Battle Cat are gonna go massacre a bunch of orcs, and then go pick daisies or some sh*t. It's gonna be f*cking glorious.

EDIT: So Ace is pretty cool, with a big asterisk (which I assume is gonna apply to all of the beasts in this series).

Feels kinda "cheap" at first, as it's just a lightweight hard-plastic thing with zero articulation, but like everything else with these series, it's pretty much identical to the original Battle Cat. It even has a very similar removable armored helmet and saddle. The interior packaging artwork can make a nice little diorama background scene when removed from the box, if you take the plastic bubble off.

The BIG problem is... the saddle and body are a little bit too wide to comfortably seat these figures, given their crummy socket-jointed hips. The legs don't really rotate out wide enough, and many of these figures have a manufacturing defect that makes the left leg pop off and on rather easily, so it's really not worth trying to force them into the saddle. Most of the figures can still be posed there and stay put, but they're kind of awkwardly straddling the saddle rather than sitting on it, like they're "trick-riding". Regular He-Man figures (along with any other 5.5-inch figures that have the "rubber band" legs instead of the socket joint) fit reasonably better.

Kind of a bummer. Since all the DC "Primal Age" figures so far have the socket joint hips, I figure none of them will properly sit on the Beasts to ride them, and that's pretty annoying, although they do look cool posed beside the figures. You'd think they would have done a little bit more testing on that to make sure they'd match properly.

I'll still pick the others up, but I can't help but think that even at "just" $20, they're a bit overpriced, considering they can't perform their one and only "job" and otherwise are just hollow plastic statues. The figures are about $12; I know that these kinds of things are generally more expensive than figures in ANY line, but I feel like $15 would be more fair. They're twice the size of the figures, but they don't "do" anything so the price seems a bit inflated.

Whether the Beasts are worth it to you or not pretty much depends on how much you like the sculpts. They do look good.

I've heard very good things about the Batcave playset, so I'm definitely going to have to pick that up when I get the chance. It's such a blatant Grayskull rip that it's not even funny.

Picked up the Joker Beast, and long story short, while it's still just an inanimate hunk of plastic, the saddle is actually molded to fit the figures MUCH better than Ace. So it's a better product for actually serving its function.

It's weird because the legs and mouth all have visible joints, but they're glued into a locked position. So it LOOKS like they're supposed to move, but they don't. Ah well.

Swung by FYE at the mall this weekend, and they had a few of these for about $10 each, so I picked up Jason Vorhees and Lex Luthor. Still no sign of the Batcave anywhere.

I saw these for the first time last week. Figured I'd get Krypto to go with my 3.75" collection since it'd still work. I'll pick up the other big ones if I ever see them, too. He's pretty much hollow and has butt for artic but is very nicely sculpted and I've seen worse figures for that price.

Yeah, just like the original Battle Cat and Panthor, the Beasts are just a hollow piece of plastic, albeit well-sculpted.

Joker Beast seats the figures WAY better than Ace does; Ace's saddle is just a wee bit too wide for most of these guys, since a stiff breeze pops their left leg right off. Haven't seen Krypto yet but definitely on the lookout.

Picked up Superman and The Joker at FYE today. Spiffy!

It seems like the rumors are true and some of the newer figures have better leg joints. I still wouldn't go crazy with 'em, but the legs on the newer ones I've picked up didn't immediately pop off upon being touched, like some of the earlier ones did.

Since these are getting pretty cheap I went ahead and ordered the few that I'm missing from the "Primal Age" line: Scarecrow, Bizarro, Flash, Black Manta, and Mr. Freeze. Trying to round off all of the more modern 5.5-scale lines. Which is easy as they're all pretty easy to come by at fairly cheap prices. Seems like only Sub-Zero and Raiden from the "Savage World" line are very expensive. All the Thundercats, DC, Horror and Street Fighter ones are pretty cheap, like $7-15 mostly. They all DO look fantastic next to the vintage MOTU and newer MOTU: Origins figures. It's crazy, I picked up a couple of these on a lark a few years ago and now I'm obsessed with this scale all over again, like I'm three years old again.

I also broke down and ordered the "Primal Age" Batcave playset, since it was only about $40. I'm saving up for a vintage Castle Grayskull (OR the new Origins one that's supposed to come out, whichever comes first ) but in the meantime I couldn't help it, I need a playset for these guys. Don't know where I'll put it, but I'll figure it out. I watched a Pixel Dan video on it and had to have it. So that'll be here in a few days. I still need the Krypto beast but that one really shot up in price recently, so I'll have to wait on that one.

Not counting variants, all I need from the Funko 5.5.-scale series are:
Thundercats - Tygra, Monkian, and Jackalman
Street Fighter - Ryu, Blanka, and M. Bison

And then from the Super7 Filmation MOTU line, I just need to pick up Eldor, Buzz-Off, and Evil Seed, not counting a few I ordered which haven't arrived yet. Also Robot He-Man but I kinda count him as a variant. I do plan to eventually pick up some/most/all of the variants in these different lines but my urgency to do so is low when I stil have several characters I need to get. So I'll get to those eventually after I complete each of the main series.
-------------------

Also, did or does anyone ever get into any of the numerous vintage knock-off 5.5-scale lines, like Galaxy Warriors, Fantasy World, Defenders of the Planets or anything like that? I have a few of the various knock-off wrestling guys from Sungold and Madison that came out back in the 80s, but none of the various fantasy lines that were meant to cash in on He-Man. When I was a kid I used to see a lot of them at discount stores or just a little bit down the aisle from the "real" He-Man stuff at regular stores, but since they were "fake He-Man guys" I ignored them. But like many people, now that I'm older and my line of vintage MOTU figures is almost complete (or as close as it'll ever be without $400 guys like Scare Glow!), I've gotten very curious about these as well. It's such an amazing web of intrigue and nonsense.

I don't have any of the vintage knock-offs but I would very much like to. Really sucks that most of them sell for around $50 loose. It's amazing that the stuff nobody wanted as a kid sometimes becomes the most in-demand thing many years later. Anyways, anybody collect any of these, either back in the day or more recently? They really do look great next to the authentic MOTU line; I hope to one day snag a few and create a truly epic 5.5 display with all the various lines.
