"Spiral" (Saw IX)

The old thread, with the original title:

http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=62226

I saw it today. Decent! The first really funny Saw movie. The kills are surprisingly inventive without going sci-fi (like "Jigsaw" with its James Bond lasers and all). I personally think figuring out who the killer is is easy if you follow the breadcrumbs if you're able to recognize misdirection (which by movie #9 you should be used to doing), but that's OK.

I'm not really feeling this as a new beginning, though. Where they could go from here is... pretty limited. Maybe "From the Book of Saw" will be like a subtitle/banner for like an ongoing Saw anthology series with different masterminds each time.

The producers explicitly mentioned recently that this is not "Saw IX". They're reserving the rights to do more "proper" Saw movies in the future. One of them even said somewhere "We might still do 'Saw IX' at some point, this is not it." This is 100% a spin-off series set in the same universe.

So... it's the ninth Saw-related movie in a row, but it's not "Saw IX".

Never saw any of those movies, but...

For one of my college roommates, she was his favorite character to watch in Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Gee, I wonder why?

It is at the very least Saw 8.5. It's in the same city, they talk about Jigsaw, and they go over his cases in the movie. They even talk about "all the other copycats" (from 4-8 ).

Thus how it can be a "spin-off set in the same universe". Without that kind of connective tissue it may as well be a reboot. Nobody's disputing that it's the same universe, they've said that from the jump.

You gotta defer to the people who make the things, though. If they say "It's not Saw IX, we still might make a Saw IX one day" then that's it. It's their circus, their monkey.

The most likely reason that they want to make that distinction perfectly clear is because eventually they'll do not only Saw IX, but more importantly, Saw X, and for that one they'll absolutely make a big huge deal about it. Therefore, they want to make it perfectly clear that "Spiral" is not "Saw IX", and that the inevitable "Spiral 2" won't be "Saw X".

Frankly, I thought everything after the first one was garbage, anyway (although the second one was kind of alright, but I still think that only the first one was a "good" movie and the rest of them were just Gore Porn, which completely missed the point of the first one, which was barely even bloody and more cerebral than anything). So I'm pretty detached from the whole thing. My wife loves 'em, though, but she has rather questionable standards on a good day.

Also...

Gross. I don't like "funny" horror movies. Had a feeling they'd be going in that direction once I saw Chris Rock was involved, but was partly hoping otherwise. Ah well.
