Polymega; The classic console that plays everything
So this came across my Twitter feed the other night and it looks kinda interesting. It can play apparently anything. According to that video, this is what it can play: "Play PlayStation, Saturn, Neo Geo CD, TurboGrafx-CD, Sega CD right on the Base Unit. Expand your compatibility with Element Module Sets for cartridge based systems like NES, SNES, TurboGrafx-16 / PC-Engine, and Genesis / Mega Drive." http://www.polymega.com/ website is down due to probably preordering so much.

That looks pretty cool though only the CD systems is a new concept, but the switching between consoles thing is kinda neat. I'm glad things like these exist but I just don't understand the appeal to these things. It's far easier to buy some emulator box that can do all of that easier and if you are hardcore enough to want the real games then you're already hardcore enough to already own those consoles anyway.

Yeah I don't see this selling well, the people who have physical copies of the game most likely will have working consoles for said games, so I doubt they will they will fork up 250 dollars just so they can play Sonic on HD

Meet the Pentium II from like 20 years ago. It can emulate all of that stuff, those breakthroughs happened when I was in high school. This is well known. People beating themselves up to buy the hipster-most system they can hook up to their TVs are morons.

My gut feeling is that the sound emulation on the NES, Sega Genesis, and some other systems will be noticeably sub-par.

I'm simultaneously skeptical and curious about this, because I don't think I've seen a single CD-based platform emulator which actually functions to an acceptable degree across the board, let alone with enough quality to make me want to buy it in a separate box.

I’ve seen this before. I like the idea of a machine that can play everything or most everything in physical form but the problem with this one are the modules.
Why would you buy separate modules for the cart based ones when that’s the equivalent of just buying the separate official machines themselves? Which I assume would also be cheaper. That part makes no sense. If they made a high quality system (anyone not this company necessarily) that could literally play every disc format and every cart format on one machine out-of-box without any required accessories THEN that would be awesome. Regardless of emulation because a lot of people collect and the physical versions are still good to have.

Because it's clearly legal, whereas messing with ROMS and emulators can be legally questionable and financially risky (especially when Nintendo wants to push the issue)?

The physical versions of games are still good to have if your emulator/pc breaks for some reason. Assuming you already have them to begin with.
The collector market is still huge. Emulators are awesome but I’d never get rid of my game collection to play exclusively on emulation. Same goes for movies/tv and digital. I Still want an actual tangible copy of stuff. Basically a backup.
