Seems odd to me, but points for originality. And I guess being mutant versions of turtles that are, in reality, endangered species... there's a certain poetry to that. Last of their kind, that sort of thing, and now even their non-mutated race's days might be numbered. Though it's a little lost on something like IDW where you can't walk 5 feet without tripping over tons of other mutants.

It also just might have been Dan Duncan doing his own thing in a script that just called for drawing "baby turtles."

Yeah, I wondered if the script/page layout notes said something vague and Duncan just freestyled something. Because some of the things the turtles do later in the series are definitely not in-line with sea turtles' abilities, like pulling their head all the way into their shells, or just the fact that they have fingers and toes instead of flippers. But it's no biggie, I ain't tripping on it.

It's like the radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker; it can be retconned to be whatever type of spider it needs to be to suit whatever story is being told. And I just looked at the wiki page for that spider and am astounded at just how many retcons there have been.

The flippers in IDW have to be a thing Duncan came up with since in Eastman's layouts they don't have flippers.

Eastman did layouts for those early issues? Where have you seen that?

Speaking of the flippers, pay attention to the mutants that didn't have fingers/toes in their animal forms. Notice anything? They all have three fingers, not a single one more.

IDW showed Eastman's sketches of the first pages when the comic started.

Hmm. So maybe the First Law of Mutation is "All mutants shall have 3 digits on their limbs"

Thanks, CK!

The flippers have always bugged me... not a big deal, but irritating.

I notice no selection for 'I like it'

With this being an old thread it's all be discussed already. Besides the points being made about them not being regular turtles I also think for the toons they can get away with it more, I mean other toon characters don't always resemble reality with features etc. I don't like the very weak green as much

With 90% of those purchased, either later dumped, deliberately killed or flushed down the toilet. Probably why they changed them to Sea Turtles. Impossible to buy at a local pet store. The murder of red-earred sliders must stop.

The thing is, it's pretty hard to reconcile the TMNT origin with them being sea turtles. You'd have to approach it completely differently.

I like it.
It helps Turtles to stand out from each other.

In regards to sea turtles, I'm not really sure they make much sense as lab animals either.

Especially since part of their purpose was for "exo-armor" creation very early on, and you're not going to get very tough shells on sea turtles. Box turtles might make more sense if they wanted a break from the "red eared slider" depiction.

They don't even look like they have flippers in those early sketches; pretty sure they have little toes in the Eastman layouts.

Am I right in thinking the Nick TMNT are all the same colour apart from Leo? If that's the case I wonder why they did that just for one of them?

I personally like each of the Turtles having their own shade of green, not for purposes of differentiating them, but just cuz it gives each of them a little more. They each have their own colored bandana, their own weapon(s), and their own personality, motivation, etc., so having a different shade of green seems OK to me.

I kinda get why some people like it, but I don't think it makes much sense.

Please, no one invoke the ancient "none of it makes sense" reply. I'm aware. I still believe in a little thing called "Verisimilitude".
