Hidetsugu Yoshioka's Super Mutant Turtles story pages!

Hydra over at the Allspark just uploaded a bunch of the Super Mutant Turtles story pages which ran in Comic Bom Bom during the 90s. You can check them out Here.

Hidetsugu Yoshioka is one of my all-time favorite Transformers artists, if not my favorite Transformers artist PERIOD, so seeing him work on Ninja Turtles was like a dream come true. His art is very heavily inspired by Derek Yaniger, Jim Lee and other Western comic artists from the 90s. You can read more about him Here.

While the Super Mutant/Metal Mutant Turtle OVAs were decidedly silly (as I'm sure most of you have watched them by now), Yoshioka takes a much more serious take on the concept and the universe in his story pages. Yoshioka did the same thing with his Generation 2 Transformers story pages, which were far darker and more intelligent than pretty much any other piece of Japanese Transformers fiction ever written (and, subsequently, the only piece of Japanese Transformers fiction I genuinely enjoy).

I haven't the time or energy to provide full translations, but reading through them, Yoshioka seems to have really boned up on his TMNT lore, both within the 80s cartoon and outside of it.

Casey Jones is presented in a manner closer to his Mirage counterpart, though more likely, Yoshioka rendered him closer to his Movie counterpart, as I doubt he read any of the Mirage comics. Also seemingly a throwback to the movies, Shredder is presented with a badly scarred face. You've also got April transforming back into a catwoman, a reference to the animated series.

The story presented here is incompatible with the Super Mutant Turtle OVAs, as it ends quite differently (Dark Devil Shredder is defeated and loses his Muta Stone, while in the OVAS, everyone is depowered when Kris Mu and Dark Mu get flung out into space).

Anyhow, they're some pretty interesting pieces and certainly quite rare.

I know the Technodrome has EXTREMELY strict rules in regards to posting scans, but I thought you guys would want to see them and I don't see how anybody is losing money over this. However, if the staff feels Mirage is suffering severe monetary setbacks by having these scans linked to on these forums, by all means, remove the link.

Wow, Spengs, you seriously need to get to work translating these! Stop all work on those mangas I sent you and concentrate on this!

Holy Cow, Casey Jones and Catwoman April in anime form? Amazing! Does it describe why April is a mutant? What is Casey's role in the story?

1987 cartoon

I thought all Japanese TMNT comics (at least back then) were strictly adaptions of the 1987 cartoon.

This is a different format. DENGEKI COMICS published strict adaptations of the 1987 cartoon. But this looks like it is from a Comic related magazine (Comic Bom Bom) inspired by the TMNT anime.

And do I see a Super-Mutant Splinter too? Dang!
Translate! Translate!

1) Casey is such a badass in those scans.

2) Casey is such a badass in those scans!

3) This manga looks like some sort of daydream 2k3 Mikey might have.

When you said American styled, you weren't kidding. Only a few facial expressions reveal its country of origin.

Does it have any connection to Marvel's Generation 2 storyline, and would you say its better? Because that currently ranks as my favorite piece of Transformers fiction I've been exposed to.

Canonically, no.

There are actually two seperate Japanese G2 storylines. The Hidetsugu Yoshioka storyline ran in the Comic Bom Bom story pages and the pack-in minicomics that came with the actual toys. The other storyline was a single manga special called "The Earth is in Danger!" which, confusingly, was published in Comic Bom Bom but wasn't part of Yoshioka's storyline or even the main Japanese Transformers continuity.

They're all collected and translated Here.

There is also the UK Generation 2 comic and the US generation 2 comic.

Comics in Japan

According to this: http://www.ninjaturtles.com/comics/manga.htm, comics are not only considered as only being for kids in Japan.

I agree! How cool would a TMNT anime in this vein be?!?

Spengs already mentioned the rules on posting scans here, but I just HAVE to put some art on this board. Here are some thumbnails I cropped.
[Mods,if this is too much to post, just let me know]

Quite a bit different from the DENGENKI COMICS style, eh?

Tony Day should make this concept into his next TMNT fan comic.
