Theories about the Green Oasis
The Green Oasis seems to come out of nowhere in the story. It just described as a place of legend, but I think the way the story was written, the art direction team wanted the audience to draw their own conclusions as to what the Oasis was.
I believe that the Green Oasis was the remains of the Northampton Farmhouse and here is why. Early on, when the series was in production. Ciro had said he had planned on Splinter being dead shortly before the series begins. And I remember him saying in an interview that wherever Splinter was, was home. When Splinter is murdered by the Shredder, the Turtles bury him at the farmhouse because: 1. That is a place that he would have enjoyed visiting in life. And if things hadn't been so hectic with the Shredder and the Kraang, and of course the Triceratons, they probably would have brought him with them if they had vacations from the city. 2. That was the safest place they could think of where his grave wouldn't be desecrated by the Shredder and his goons. Or unknowingly by the city. Following Splinter's murder, the Turtles stay in their childhood home. But there is an air that even though they are safe and sheltered...the lair just doesn't feel like home anymore because Splinter is no longer there. So the only thing they really have left is each other and their honorary family members. And that is what they desperately cling to. When they reach the Oasis the things that keyed me into the possibility of the farmhouse is the pool elderly Mikey jumps into is a depression that looks as though it had once been the foundation of a building. And given the passage of time, without anyone to keep the place maintained the surrounding forest would have certainly taken over the farmhouse and its grounds. Plus the last line Leo says in the show is "We're Home" and then pans to the sky and we see the flashback of the Turtles gathering together with Splinter for that family photo. They may not have completely understood what was drawing him there, particularly since Splinter's grave marker also would have been claimed by the Earth. Also it's pointed out that both Raph and Leo have significant memory loss, but it's slowly coming back to them. At least for Leo it's returning. Mikey on the other hand, after spending years alone in the desert is a borderline Alzheimer's patient. I'm almost surprised he doesn't have type 2 diabetes due to all the Pizza he's been eating. Donnie is the only one who has his memory completely intact, but even if he has memories of the farmhouse. The surrounding land has changed significantly over the past handful of decades, so it would no longer be the place he once knew. |

I believe there was probably a human tribe living there too, who cultivated the trees and water there. I was half-expecting to see an elderly April greet the Turtles there, too bad it didn't happen.

But you realize of course... if it WAS somehow the foundation of the farm house...
The Kraang ship is still there. Dun dun dun... Though I question the fact that the animal-people they run into are all species non-native to the U.S. Either TMNT are far from home or maybe they were zoo animals. (I doubt they were mutated humans given the numbers.) They're so spoiled though... Probably giving him diarrhea and lack of nutrition, thus he's become frail. (Okay, plus a clear retirement from training.) |

But are you really going to end up with enough humans turned into mutant Meerkats to create a sustainable gene pool? (And to throw logic into a fantasy story for the hell of it, hybrids in nature are usually sterile; let alone how it may not work for cross-species hybrids.)
edit: Wait. If other animals mutated, where are all the other turtle people. |

In the previous episodes, it was established that the Kraang created humans by mutating monkeys/apes and they could viably reproduce so I think Mira's family of mutant Meerkats was also able to viably reproduce.

If her family were originally animals from a zoo (in NYC?), that probably isn't even as large of a population as in the wild, so the gene pool might still be questionable. |

In one of the episodes, she mentions that she's the last of her tribe, so I don't know that means, the last of her specials, or just the only member who was part of that group?

Given the rectangular shape, I thought it was the New York Sewer system that collapsed into a lake.

I think if Stockman's and the Kraangs DNA banks shown earlier in the series were anything to go by then whoever made the bomb could have deliberately spliced a bunch of random animal DNA into the mutagen mix - a bit like shrapnel on a grenade - so not only is there the mutagen thrown out, but random DNA to splice it with. It would explain the non native creatures, and horrific mixes of multiple creatures tend to cause nightmarish beasts like Justin or Mega Shredder, so those near the epicentre would have been likely to have been reduced to monsters that would have wreaked havoc. I don't think the bomb would have destroyed humanity though - I think thats just Raph's perception of it. I think North America would have been screwed, and the damage to plants would have resulted in desertification - especially after 50 years. I reckon the world just quarantined the area and abandoned it to the mutants running rampant there - which is why Oasis still survived because it was on the edge or just outside the quarantine zone. As for it being the farmhouse, its possible, but I would have thought it more likely they'd have moved further than that, after all they were frantically running around in buggies and wartrukks - they would have covered a pretty major distance.

I mean... it's a nice idea if it was the farmhouse foundation, but it's not much of an oasis... Given the size that would sustain them for what? A few months assuming the lizard and honey badger folk are also going to be consuming the resources as well.
Maybe it was one of many sources of water? I don't know... but I was expecting a huge valley or something rather than the equivalent of an in ground pool surrounded by trees.

Considering there was a whole forest behind them, I'm sure that wasn't the only source of water.

Yeah, I figured the water is from an underground source that isn't leaving anytime soon. The pool certainly isn't being filled by rain, after all.

As far as survival is concerned, I think the turtles could utilize the trees to build a large enough house for all of them, foraging for any tools and amenities they could find. The water could be used for cooking, bathing, and hydration. An underground spring seems the most probable. Donney informs Raph it hasn't rained in a few years, so how else could the water and trees have remained for so long?
Here is my theory on the mutagen bomb. Since Baxter Stockman never had an official closure (other than being demutated,) he felt he had to be the next 'Shredder.' As hhe result, he attempted to create an army of mutants of his own and spliced DNA from multiple animals. It all went horribly wrong.

Personally I felt that they all died and this Oasis was their form of heaven...kind of like the first Land Before Time film. Who knows, maybe all the Mad Max junk could've been their purgatory.
