I remember before Enterprise came out there were rumors one of the main characters would be gay, I think it was supposed to be the engineer guy, but it never came to pass in the actual series.

I remember that, too.

It's pretty shocking Star Trek hasn't had an LGBT main character yet.

Captain Rupert Traske was awesome in Lost Frontier, though.

What about when Dax had that lesbian kiss in Deep Space Nine? I remember that being such a big deal when it happened, like it was a huge controversy and talked about on Oprah and all other talk shows at the time.

Now lesbian kissing in movies/tv shows is so common that I don't even think twice about it. It's hard to believe back in the mid/late 90's when Deep Space Nine was airing, lesbian kissing was still a shocking thing on TV.

It was a big deal at the time. They even had to defend it in interviews and news articles. I think this was before the internet too (can't remember what year the episode aired), so I don't recall if the backlash was online or not.

Probably. Sort of a pseudo Enterprise Season 4... lots of prequel elements/east eggs to TOS and "fan service" and not a lot of anything else.
