Chris Evans hangs up the Shield done as Captain America

Chris Evans on Thursday announced he has officially hung up his shield.

After playing Captain America for nearly a decade, Evans tweeted that it was over.

"Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful," Evans tweeted.

The actor previously eluded to retiring the character in a profile in the The New York Times which quoted him as saying, "You want to get off the train before they push you off."

The 37-year-old Evans who played Johnny Storm in a couple of Fantastic Four films first played Steve Rogers aka Captain America in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger.

He would go on to play the fan favorite in The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (201, as well cameo in a number of other Marvel films.

It's possible that following Evans' retirement, another Captain America could rise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the comics, Steve Rogers has been replaced in the past by characters who exist in the MCU such as Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and Sam Wilson aka the Falcon (Anthony Mackie).

Evans makes his final appearance as Captain America in the currently untitled Avengers 4. While Evans' Captain America had a relatively small amount of screentime in this year's Avengers: Infinity War, the writers of that movie and Avengers 4 have said the hero will be front and center in the next installment.

FAKE news. This is hooplah so we go, "ZOMG! Captain America dies in Avengers 4!"

Maybe he dies and maybe he doesn't, but he'll return.

Yeah, that's a lot of assumptions and bias.

All he said is he's wrapped for Avengers 4. Not, "So long, MCU, and thanks for all the fish!"

Everyone seems to be continually pointing to, "B-b-b-but look! Everyone's contract is up with Avengers 4! Everyone's leaving the MCU!"

Yeah, right. So that they can lead the MCU with just Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and Captain Marvel (who isn't even proven yet) going forward, until they get their antlers around the mutants? FAKE news.

And Hawkeye. Don't forget Hawkeye!

Ooh, or Falcon. Real top-brass material right there.

No, he really IS hanging up the shield. It has been reported by everyone from Access Holllywood to TMZ, and even the evening news. This is his last film as Cap, and my personal guess is it will end up with the Death of Captain America storyline, with either Bucky (most likely) or Falcon taking over his mantle. It is quite literally the last BIG plot left for him. And he is getting older, so he probably wants to hang it up before he can no longer physically perform the role.

That said, there are plenty of other characters to mine, like Spider-Woman/Arachne (unconnected to Spider-Man), Wonder Man (NOT to be in any way confused with the DC distaff character), Aries, and others. Aries in particular might be an interesting choice to introduce, being Thor's Greek counterpart and an immortal like the Eternals, Celestials, and Titans. Spider-Woman was also pivotal in the Secret Invasion plot, so she would make a good choice if they decide to do a version of it going forward.

New places just re-reporting the tweet where he doesn't actually say he's leaving the character doesn't lend extra veracity.

Just like Ben and The Batman. A snowball effect of misinformation that gets so far along, people don't realize its foundation comes from nothing.

It's either...

A) He's trying to get people thinking Cap dies in Avengers 4 as misdirection for when Tony does. Undoubtedly with studio approval (you think Feige would sign off on Evans letting the cat out of the bag this early?).

B) Cap does "die," temporarily, just like in the comics. Winter Soldier does take over for a while. This has been telegraphed a bit. Maybe Rogers does sit out Phase 4 and then, I don't know, the Fantastic 4 get to rescue him in their movie later on.

C) Evans is Ryan Reynoldsing everyone.

I don't see any other way at looking at it. It's not like Evans has ever been striking gold with his non-Captain America stuff (and even the whole time he's been Cap, he's had time to do plenty of other movies) people love him as Captain America, he's still age appropriate, and Marvel/Disney need him to keep the brand strong, particularly when X-Men and F4 get married into it. That said, I could see them giving Rogers a break in Phase 4 in the meantime, which is why I think B is probably the way it will go.
