Splinter's line in the first movie, "All fathers care for their sons" - problematic?

Obviously Splinter was talking about himself here, but we know in the real world, that line is not true. Some fathers never even meet their sons/kids, they impregnate some woman and then go off and never take responsibility or are absent fathers. Other fathers beat or abuse their sons. Or other fathers are just deadbeat dads who even if they stay with their sons barely do anything to take care of them.

Do you find that line problematic in today's day and age? Instead Splinter should say, "All fathers *should* care for their sons."

You're way overthinking this.

I don't mean as far as murdering Splinter, but think of the possibilities if censors were not an issue.
Shredder and Krang combined had the biggest arsenal of any villains in all of the cartoons.

That's how I see it too, similar to the line in Guardians of the Galaxy 2
"He may have been your father boy, but he wasn't your daddy"

Funny enough, I have no clue who my actual father is, but I never had any issue with that line. Guess I just always knew what he meant.

Splinter also tries to get out of the situation he's in (chained to a wall in Shredder's hideout). He had to realize instinctively that Danny had not run away from a family that was abusing him (he's rather the kind of typical lost/rebellious teenager), and he tries to awaken his empathy by showing him that they share a logic of "stable" people. And in the end, it works ... The use of psychology sounds rather ninja to me.

I don’t have a problem with Splinter’s line, but I can see why some people might.

Just an old guy speaking from his own perspective and maybe can't fathom how a father wouldn't.

edit: This Splinter was also always a rat and living life hidden away the reality of many human parent-child relationships may be a little foreign to him. (Lets face it, there was no Dr. Phil for him to watch back then. lol)

I'm imagining this line coming from Splinter.

Let's look at it this way. Splinter is obviously not the Turtles' biological father, but he was the one who found them abandoned, fed them, raised them, and trained them. Despite their differences, they all care for each other very much and he is very much their "father."

Remember that Shredder said in his grand speech "This is your family. I am your father," but he used the kids who he took in as pawns for money and power instead of acting like a real father to them. Splinter takes issue with this and tells the kids that the Foot Clan is not a family and Shredder is using them for his own desires. Danny's father, while not amazing by any stretch, isn't a terrible person and deep down he certainly does care for him.

I must confess, as a kid it went right past me, but when I was a teen and later an adult, I've seen more people than you might think give that line the old Mrs. Krabappel "HAH!" whenever I've watched the movie in a small group.

Everybody just lets it slide, but yeah, ol' Splinter was definitely making a major ass-pull when he came up with that line. It's factually incorrect and easily disproven. All fathers should care for their sons, but a lot of them absolutely don't. But that wouldn't have achieved the same dramatic effect, obviously.
