I know it's probably stupid for me to be bummed out about this, but I'm a little sad that Donatello appears to only come with one bo. The original release had 2 staffs, as seen here:
And I know Donatello, in all forms of media, only ever uses one staff. I realize that. But I just liked how his action figures always used to come with two staffs. From 1988 all the way into 2003 and so forth. I'm not sure exactly when Playmates started only giving Donnie figures just one staff, but the 2003 era definitely still kept that old tradition alive.

Good point. I'd even say this particular bo staff, while simple, is one of the best we've gotten from a playmates figure.
11.99 price point is solid Last edited by Drose18; 11-27-2023 at 09:16 PM. |

At the Virtual Ninja Turtle Museum (tmnttoys.com) you can find pics of several reissues. Some of them look like only 1 bo staff was included, unless the other one was hiding behind the bottom bubble art?

The Mutagen Man reissue in the 2022 Classic Cohort 4 pack Foot Cruiser box set was missing the Mutagen Machine Gun, Gooey Garbage, and Life Support System accessories. Only the Skull Plug and the hose meant to connect it to the missing Life Support System pack are included. Presumably because they no longer have the means/molds to reproduce the rest. That's somewhat easier to swallow when he's in a 4 pack, but as a single release it may not work as well.

I decided to pick one of these up just to compare with the originals. I got Raph, because I was most curious about him since all the other re-issues of him have had a very weird green and this one seemed like it didn't. I will say... the colors actually are different from the original, but they're not glaring. Mostly it's just enough to feel "off", but they're close enough. This Raph is a darker, richer green than the original (but only by a slight bit) and the knee and elbow pads are a different shade of brown from the original. The most notable differences, however, would be that the outline on the plastron is thicker and slightly sloppier (but not that much) than on the original, but who knows if this is standard or just for this one specific figure, but even more than that... the original figure has a wash throughout the skin that gives a bit of shading to the figure. The re-issue completely lacks this wash on the skin.
Overall, this is a pretty solid re-release (though the rope for the zip line is missing), and the paint was done pretty well. Unlike a lot of other recent Playmates re-releases, there's no missing paint apps (unless you count the lack of a wash on the turtle's skin, which does make the original figure look slightly more... premium? Not sure what the right wording would be here).

This is a very solid indication that the Super7 2003 series (or at least the four brothers) will be incredibly high in demand (assuming that there are no blatant underlying quality issues).

Yeah, same. These are my very first 2003 related toys I have bought, since I was not really involved in the fandom much during that period (was in my early 20s and very busy)
I'm kinda getting out of super7 these days but I'd be curious to see what any 2k3 inspired figs looked like from them for sure. |
