(Possible Spoilers) The IDW TMNT New Issue Discussion Thread

I went to my local shop and picked up cover A (The Raph cover) of IDW's new ongoing TMNT title. I've just finished reading it and I thought I'd create a thread where we can talk about each issue as it hits. So on to TMNT 1:
Spoiler:
We are introduced to April, Casey, Baxter, and the shadowy figure of "General Krang" a military "man" who is bankrolling Stockman's genetic experiments, which the Turtles and Splinter are a part of. He's also working on a super soldier mutagen for Krang. Is Krang an amalgam of the ole Utrom Shredder and Agent Bishop?
The events occur in the present day, 18 months ago, and 15 months ago. Seems that the Turtles will mutate to a teenage state. I still hope Splinter is a father and not just a pal. The Turtles and Splinter are all part of an experiment. So far no Yoshi, but we do get an attempt at an explanation as to why a rat could learn ninjitsu: the genetic experiments are attempting to "splinter" the rat's "human" abilities from that of the rat. The Turtles are part of a human body armor experiment.
April is the one who names the Turtles after the Renaissance greats. She seems to have a larger part in the Turtles origin this time around.
I'm, not sure what I think of the changes so far. I mean we're only one issue in so I don't know what might come in the months to come, though each arc is only 4 issues long, so the blanks had better be filled in quickly. So far I'm concerned by the modified "genetic experiments" origin and the lack of Hamato Yoshi.

I figured you'd be a Raph cover guy! Did the shop have each turtle option available? I'm probably going to pick up my issue later today.

All 4 Turtles were there. They may have had the fold out cover...but I didn't check them thoroughly. I was just excited to see Turtles on the IDW rack.

Oh and one more thing:
Spoiler:
A dumpster diving Raph finds a "COWABUNGA!" t-shirt and exclaims, "Oh, now that's just wrong." before discarding it. Kinda funny, but seems every Not-Fred Wolf interpretation of the Turtles has used that gag.

So far I haven't heard anything that makes me flinch.

But the day is young.

Its an interesting issue, with a bunch a questions that needs to be answered.
One thing that bugs me is,
Spoiler:
they were just turtles 18 months ago and a few months later they know how to fight and have been taught by Splinter :/

I hope there's a good explanation behind this lol

Really, I'd have sworn the
Spoiler:
only 18 month span between baby turtles/unmutated rat to fighting Hob and his goons would do something flinch-esque. I mean, what does that mean for the family dynamic, and the ninja training that the Turtles and Splinter have been mutants for A LITTLE OVER A YEAR!

Oh and pl212, you might spoiler tag....just in case.

Sorry man. I wanted a IDW Raph and this was the most "avatar-esque".
Spoiler:
Casey is introduced getting pummeled by his blitzed pops. Raphael breaks down their door to aid in the domestic dispute. Thoughts Andrew?

Ok I spoiler tagged it

Oh, is that what you meant? I was confused by the "they will mutate to a teenage state" part.

But yeah... I'm not sure about 18 month-old Turtles that are supposed to be ninja. Sounds pretty dodgy at best to me, on paper. Is it possible you're/we're missing something?

Because I'm sure even thought the title says it, some one will gripe that we didn't tag stuff...despite the title saying there will be spoilers.
Edit and yes Andrew
Spoiler:
less than 2 years takes place between pre-mutated animals and "ninja butt-kicking."

I think -- as the beginning of what I am assuming will be a blossoming Casey-Raphael friendship and introduction of Casey -- it is thematically more powerful than them just running into each other in the park by chance.

What's Casey look like?

I dunno. I find the issue to be.... WEIRD.

Spoiler:
Ok so we have Chet who in the Mirage comics was the kid who purchased the turtles and then lost them in the sewers. Now he's working for Baxter (who works for General Krang) to make this super soldier serum thing. April starts out as the college intern and ends up naming the turtles because she's taking a class in Renaissance art.

Yes it's nice that April is now more part of their origin and Chet has a bigger role. But the origin is just....off somehow. The way they name Splinter is kinda stupid as well (and is it just me or did Lindsey look like Irma?) But they become fighters in only a couple months?? Plus Casey is obviously YOUNGER than April. He's just a kid being abused by his alcaholic father.

And the whole thing with General Krang. I hope he ends up being human and not some alien.

Oh and the turtles... They're obviously Sea Turtles...but the poor things should have more water than that!

Sorry for the confusion I was assuming anyone who posts here have already read the issue and knew what I was talking about.
Spoiler:
So 18 months before they were "ninja turtles" they were in a lab as actual turtles. A few months later they became what we all know now.

I found it weird.

I haven't read the issue yet so I'm only going off of your guys' cryptic blurbs, but does it seem that we might be headed toward the Turtles formerly being humans, merging with humans, or something along those lines?

I believe so, it seems like something along those lines but merging with humans would make the most sense to me right now.

Well, I'm not against such a thing as long as it's not something rubbish like the Fred Wolf "touch this and touch that" mutagen.

I dunna about that. Part of me thinks that...
Spoiler:
The genetically modified Turtles and Rat will come into contact with some of Baxter's/Krang's super soldier mutagen and grow to their humanoid size. Maybe the good people at Stock-Gen train them in ninjitsu...you know through Weapon X style virtual reality immersion technology.
