Obama Could Produce New Shows For Netflix

Netflix and former President Barack Obama are potentially going to work together on new TV shows. The New York Times reports today that Obama is in "advanced negotiations" with Netflix to create a "series of high-profile shows." NYT's report is based on unspecified sources.

As part of the deal, Netflix would pay Obama and his wife, Michelle, an unspecified fee for new TV shows. According to the report, Obama's shows will focus on "inspirational stories" instead of responding to President Trump or conservative policy.

"President and Mrs. Obama have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire," Obama's former senior adviser Eric Schultz told NYT. "As they consider their future personal plans, they continue to explore new ways to help others tell and share their stories."

Specifics about Obama's Netflix shows are under wraps for now, but NYT says one potential idea is for a program where Obama moderates discussions about things like health care, immigration, foreign policy, and climate change. Michelle Obama, meanwhile, could star in a show where she talks about things like nutrition and health, which she worked to promote while at the White House. Additionally, the Obamas might be behind new Netflix documentaries or even fictional shows that line up with their "beliefs and values."

Apple and Amazon have also reportedly been interested in making shows with the Obamas, according to the report.

Obama has a history with Netflix. He recently appeared in the first episode of David Letterman's new Netflix show, My Guest Needs No Introduction.

Netflix plans to have around 700 original TV shows by the end of 2018; the company plans on spending around $8 billion on content in 2018. Obama's new show(s) could be among them.

I can't stand popcorn myself. It always scratches my throat, and it smells objectionable.

I'd like to see a political discussion show that isn't based on sophomoric humor, smarminess, or vitriol, so if he can do that then I'll check it out.

The Obamas just signed a multiyear deal to make shows and movies for Netflix

- Barack and Michelle Obama have entered a multiyear agreement with Netflix to produce series and features.
- The Obamas say they hope "to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world."

The Obamas are headed to Netflix.

The company announced Monday that the former first couple have signed a multiyear agreement to produce films and series for Netflix. The deal can include scripted and unscripted series, as well as documentaries and features. The content will be produced by Higher Ground Productions.

"One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience," the former president said in a statement. "That's why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix — we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world."

Obama previously appeared on Netflix's "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman."

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement the Obamas "are uniquely positioned to discover and highlight stories of people who make a difference in their communities and strive to change the world for the better." A New York Times report in March said Obama's projects are not intended to address President Donald Trump or conservatives. Instead, it would focus on inspirational content.

Maybe Netflix lowers rates to sway more people to sign up in response?

If so...

Thanks, Obama!

I want to see Obama’s contract. Has anyone actually seen the paperwork? Time for it to be released.
