Do you look like your name?

This might sound like a strange idea for a thread, but ever been called by a different name than your actual one? Or been told you don't look like your name?

It has happened to me a few times at my first job many years ago. I remember being called "António" a few times by older co-workers. They told me I looked like that name. I guess because I look so average/generic they gave me one of the most generic/stereotypical male names in my country.

I've also been told by this one guy before that guys bearing my first name tend to be jokers... I wouldn't say I fit that "stereotype" he has of people bearing my first name, but whatever.

Also, if you google first names you'll see that they have a description/meaning... and I'm sure pretty much no one fits their given names based on that criteria.

So, has this ever happened to you? Or do you think you "look like" your name?

I remember that my acting teacher called me "Teodor" for some reason once... That was odd but I think she just had a brain fart.

A similar thing happened to this guy I know as well. He was once called "Mário" by his teacher... and his name is not even close to Mário nor does it even start with a letter close to M. He was pretty puzzled, needless to say.

it's funny. Names often can be an indication of social class. I notice some names are more common in certain social classes than others. Also often you hear people say they think all guys or women named this or that are dicks or bitches.

I knew this guy who had a thing for girls named "Sara" and had a few girlfriends with that first name. And I also know a guy who has about 3-4 ex-girlfriends named "Patrícia". It's an interesting phenomenon.

No, it's only ever accidentally been co-workers names on occasion.

Most recently though it was "Christina," since that's the name of the other new girl my supervisor is also training, plus there is apparently another Christina she oversees. I mean, she wasn't too far off the mark and I kidded her that if she wanted to confuse herself even more my middle name is Christine.

Not sure that there are any stereotypical expectations in looks for people of my first name though.

I've only about twice met a person where I have thought their name would be another and for some strange reason a character on one of the toons my daughter likes, kept referring to the boy as Justin when the show first started.

As for me, only one person has ever called me something else because he thought I looked liked an actress in at tv soap (and I didn't either), called my her character name and said he preferred it to my name.

Has anyone ever told you you don't like your name?

Do other people bearing your name look and act very differently than you?

Ha!
This is what I get for answering a question while not being fully awake!

I totally missed the word look when I read it through the first time.

I've never been outright told that other people don't like my name, but I know at the moment it's having a bit of internet meme Glory.
So that to me says the name itself means something pretty specific to a whole bunch of people.

However my dislike of the name predates that by along country mile.

I used to not really like either of my two given names when I was a kid for some reason. Dunno why. Maybe because I was a kid and just disliked them for the heck of it.

I do look like my name. People often tell me that a person of my name would be the bubby, youthful and innocent looking type.

I did find it a bit emharassing as a kid however, when I had a thought "When I'n gonna grow up and be a big man, I'm still gonna have that babyish name!"

Shredder and Krang combined had the biggest arsenal of any villains in all of the cartoons.

I'm indifferent to it. My name is Marc. A group of girls called me Max in highschool because I looked like the guy from Roswell, so that became my knickname in high school. I don't know if I look like a Marc. I dunno. Weird thread

I don't like it, because, it doesn't really mesh with my second name and surname, but I've got used to it now.

My name's not terribly common. So I don't have to worry about comparisons or people saying "Huh. You don't LOOK like a Cylons."

Some not so common names are nice. Tbh, some names are just too common which kind of ruins them. And it can be a generational trend as well. back in my mother's day it seemed like most girls were named Maria... hence why so many women aged 50 and above seem to be named Maria. Meanwhile, women aged 30 and below here often are named Ana. I remember being in HS and looking at the classroom sheets and some classes had like 6 girls bearing "Ana" as their first name, seriously.

Ana and Maria are fine names, but they've become so common that it kind of ruined them. hence why nearly every maria and Ana I know prefer going by their second name or by their last name.

Mine's not overly common and more around my generation, so not found in the elderly but used in the young/children either.
When another person with my name started to work at the same place as me some years back my manager asked me if I had a nickname or would consider having one to use at work, I told her no.

I used to like my nickname (which is a shortened version of my full first name) more than my actual name, but I really don't care which name I am called by all that much anymore.

During their living years, my grandfather and my grandmother often called me by a different variant of my name, and I thought nothing much of it because it felt normal.

My name is certainly not rare, but wouldn't say it's top 5 in terms of popularity for guys of my generation. In a group of people I'm often the only one, which means no one calls me by my last name nor do they have to come up with a nickname to refer to me.

I'm a tiny Hispanic chick who dresses either like a dude or like I just came out of Hot Topic. I have a basic white girl name. I don't think of someone like me when I hear my name, but I also can't imagine being named anything else. Also, bless my parents, my name still isn't the common spelling. This also means though that my name is misread a lot. Kayleigh. Kay-lee. So, I get a lot of people asking "is it Kylie? Katie?" Also one of my best friends went half a year calling me Kay. That's just a common nickname, didn't think anything of it...until one day he called me Ky-leigh-a. Turned around and gave him a WTF look and he asked "that's not how it's pronounced?"

Far as being called other names, haven't really had that experience. There's one instance, and I don't think it was accidental. I was in class, went up to ask the teacher something, can't remember what. There was this kid next to her desk, and as I waited for an answer, he tried guessing my name. He called me things like Aphrodite, Esperanza, Esmeralda, all this stuff that was exotic/uncommon. Told him how far off the mark he was, never gave up. Sorta figured he was just picking on me, since my last encounter with him, we bumped into each other in a hall, I apologized, and he shoved me away and yelled "damn emo skeleton, watch where you're going," as he walked off. Also he just seems to be a general @$$ to everyone. Guess it counts though?
