RIP David Wise

Yes, that David Wise.

From his FB: "David Wise passed away peacefully at home last night after a tough battle with lung cancer and a very sudden decline. He spent his last day surrounded by family and friends. He requested to be cremated, so no funeral will be held but plans are being made for a gathering to honor him. Please feel free to express your condolences on this Facebook page. All are welcome here, just as all were welcome in David's life -- friend, family, peer, fan, all of you."

Yeesh.

I have opinions of this or that way on him, but he really did "create" a lot of what people most associate with the TMNT, for better or worse. Also, I had the pleasure of having him on the "Shellshocked" podcast 7 years ago:

Thank you very much David Wise for the contributions you made to my childhood and that of many other TMNT fans from my generation, I will always treasure the work you and the rest of the staff/crew/cast put into the fond memories from my younger years, enjoy heaven.

Wise and I probably didn't agree on much of anything ideologically, but I usually found his social media posts amusing and informative (he loved old Godzilla movies and other aspects of pop culture history), and I enjoy many of the episodes he wrote for TMNT, as they often had a consistent internal logic and appreciation for self-aware humor, not always present in some of the scripts from other writers. He will be missed.

damn. i'm rather sad that our last facebook was a tad...odd..

I paid him a compliment on one of the shows lines, he kind of fired back at me in a mean way. I decided to unfriend him then as I didn't want my thoughts colored on him wrong.

but no idea the man was ill.

created a big part of my child hood and make no mistake, tmnt would not have lasted this long lest he didnt contribute to it.

Without his contributions to my favourite cartoons, I would not be pursing a hobby as a writer or an editor today. I owe him a debt that can only be repaid through hard work and an equally healthy and bright imagination. Thankyou for blazing a trail David.

Sad day.
Very sad day.
RIP.

In a bigger context it is sometimes hard to live and understand that everyone who had shaped your early years will most likely die during your life time and you will be absolutely helpless to do anything about it.

For better or worse, most of us wouldn't be TMNT fans without his contributions.

RIP, good sir.

RIP Mr. Wise, and thank you. Life would be duller had your work not helped give the TMNT the place in the world that they have.

Oh, no. I did not know he was in bad health. He is the great innovator of the franchise. I am thankful for what he molded and I loved in my childhood to today.

At least it's better than only having heroes who were all already passed on before you were even born.

Rest in Peace David Wise

I was just on Facebook and found out David Wise died. I sent my condolences, I wish I had got to speak to him more before he died.

My post: "I can't believe this has happened. David never saw eye to eye with me on things but I respected him as a writer and I'm not sure he ever figured out how much he meant to me. I mean he created one of my favourite TV shows of all time the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I wish he could have talked to me more in the last few years. This is a huge loss for cartoon animation writing. Rest in peace David and cowabunga, you'll always be part of my childhood."

Man, I never knew he was sick or had health issues. Very sad.

What can I say? He introduced like a million people to the Ninja Turtles via the cartoon. Without him, the show probably would have turned out very different as the ground work he laid down for Season 1 stayed for the entire series.
