Now it's officially happening, finally. Matrix 4, with everybody involved:

Nobody really wants this...not after the last two and the story essentially ended.

I feel like I'm one of the few people of my generation who's never seen the Matrix. That being said, I know the red pill and blue pill meme.

if I remember correctly, the biggest selling poitn of the movies were the special effects during the fight scenes and such.

I feel like people forgot how big and influential The Matrix was for a while. The Guardians in the 2k3 TMNT cartoon remind me of The Matrix as did Viscera from WWF in the Undertaker's Ministry of Darkness faction in 1999.

I don't know that it was any one thing. Mostly I think it was the "What if our reality isn't reality?" hook for a lot of people... plus as window dressing the fight scenes and Bullet Time™, which was brand new (and guys like Paul "Worthless Sh**" Anderson would like immediately co-opt for their horrible movies).

I'm down for Matrix 4. It's been long enough that I'd be fascinated to see what they do with that world.

Well, I remember "The Wachowski Brothers" headed the ship the first time around. I guess the credits might read a bit differently for the next one.

I'll watch it. I enjoyed 2 and 3 okay. But for me, The Matrix is a standalone movie. Everything else is, as Cubed likes to say, just like fan fiction.

I don't know, it's not 1999 anymore. Remember back in 1999 the idea of an alternate reality, or our reality all being inside a computer program felt novel and "futuristic" at the time.

We're now in the year 2019, that, along with stuff like slow motion fighting an dodging bullets...is so common and mainstream now it's almost boring. We see this everywhere now.

I really don't think a new Matrix movie could stand out in the modern year...even with Keanu Reeves back.

I think it will stand out. But I don't think it will succeed.

Matrix is a great concept that definitely deserves a reboot as I had mentioned before but not sure where this is going, I would've never done a new Matrix movie with the original cast, their story finished. Only way I would want to see the original cast is if it was a new Matrix 2 that ignored reloaded and revolutions, I mean it can work we saw that there had been tons of Neos before so it's not a new concept. It's only Keanu and Trinity returning so far, I think Keanu returning is because of his success with John Wick. I like the wachowski's but only one is returning, I think you need both to get the magic of the original film, similar to how TMNT is better with Laird and Eastman.

My only hope is that they don't do a Matrix within the Matrix...

Were are still nowhere near entering a full on virtual world. Yeah VR games exist but to the nature of the Matrix which is basically a giant holodeck? Naw. Still futuristic.

Edit- also the theme of what if our reality was really not our reality will never die.

But didn't Neo and Trinity die in the third film?

The machines took his body... he could come back easy. Trinity... eh. Maybe she'll be stuck in the Matrix or something. Or... what I'm afraid of, is that it will be revealed it was a Matrix within a Matrix.

Neo's fate was left up in the air, and a lot of time was devoted in the canonical online MMO to exploring what happened to him. They never resolved it there though

I do remember that Matrix MMORPG was h heavily promoted as an in continuity game story, even after it was shut down the wachowski's didn't change their opinion. I think it will very likely be ignored though. Let's see what they do, I'm personally excited even if I think a story set in a different time is a better idea before the one but whatever. Counting that cellphones have changed and no one uses a landline things will definitely change unless the matrix world is still set in the l ate 90s like in the original trilogy was.

The matrix whithin the matrix is not very original but I can live with that, I remember that was a popular theory back when Matrix Reloaded came out and it seemed cool but I was also 14. Matrix Reloaded is a flawed film but it did some amazing world building.

Keanu read the script and says it's "ambitious."

On one hand, you think "well, of course. I mean, it'd have to be."

On the other, it seems like scaling things down and focusing on less elements, in the vain of the first Matrix, would be a tempting route for this franchise.

Neil Patrick Harris joins it:

Also, the guy who played Black Manta was cast in what is billed as a "lead role."
