I got nearly 100 hours on Dragon Quest VIII on the 3DS. The game is quite bigger than it looks. Plus, there's minigames, sidequests and gotta grind a bit at times. Usually what makes RPGs so big isn't the story per se, since the story and the mandatory dungeons and boss fights usually take like 40-45 hours max. It's the stuff I mentioned above that really adds up to the overall time spent on a game.
I beat DQ VIII on PS2 eons ago but I don't think I spent 100 hours doing so. Maybe 30. Did they add a ton of stuff to the 3DS version?

Are you sure? It's a pretty big game: https://howlongtobeat.com/game.php?id=2824

Did you avoid every single side-quest, never used the monster arena, never had to grind before one of the big bosses for a while, never spent time at the casino minigames and put down the controller after beating the main boss, thus completely avoiding the post-game?
