Ok I must be suffeeing an overloaded brain due to insomnia, but- it just occured to me that cartoon/comic strip families seem heavily weighted on the female side of the equation. Dagwood, Homer, Peter Griffin, Hank Hill (marginally)- all have one thing in common. They are all a bunch of half-wits with wives who are clearly smarter, more attractive, and more capable of being successful than they are themselves. So, WHAT exactly do these ladies SEE in these guys? Let's look at them- all are gluttenous, goofy, and a bit lazy, and hardly what would be considered a "catch", by any standards. So how,did they end up with mates who by all accounts, should have been waaay out of their league?

Well, yeah, but WHY? I mean, if these guys were real, would the ladies have ever even looked twice at them? I know it sometimes happens irl with guys who have something going for them besides looks, be it talent (Billy Joel and a few others fall into this category) money (Hef), or brains (nerdy guys everywhere like the gang on Big Bang Theory), but a mouth-breathing neanderthal, with as much ambition as a slug, and the basic manners of a gorilla? (Particularly with Homer and Peter, who are two of the biggest examples of this.) It simply does not compute.

It's just that the trope is so old it's become so exaggerated and cartoony, plus comedy cartoons crank it to even more sillier level to the point the guy got zero redeeming qualities.

Well yes, objectively, I KNOW that, but I guess after three nights with very little sleep, it just makes no sense. Even from a humor standpoint. Especially when it gets cranked to 11 in cases like Homer and Peter. If I were Marge or Lois, I'd have just kept looking, and never even gotten to the "I Do's". Hank at least has a few redeeming qualities, though still suffers the trope a nit.
