Voyager 2 has flown into interstellar space

Unmanned spaceprobe Voyager 2, launched in August 1977, has flown out of the Solar System and into interstellar space. That happened on 5 November 2018.

The coolest thing is that the Voyager probes carry grammophone records with a taste of Earth, if some extraterrestrials find them.

That's incredible. And I'm amazed that a launch 16 days apart, plus different trajectory, resulted in a 6 year difference. I didn't even exist when this thing and its sibling left Earth... With that distance and age of the technology, wonder how long it takes for a signal to come back.

I guess if the solar system is somewhat disc shaped, if we just went in the direction we label as "up," rather than out past the planets, I suppose we'd leave the solar system a lot sooner...?

Not long, a lot of people don't realise that the transmissions from both are actually as light (most probes are this way), so less than a day even at the distances they are at.

I love the optimism on the part of the ones who launched it, that the alien space travelers who may come across it would have a record player.

At least they had the good sense even then not to pack it with 8-tracks. Human beings don't even know what those are for anymore, let alone space people.

I'm genuinely curious which records were included. Hopefully, nothing by the Grateful Dead. That'd most likely be considered an act of war, even way up there.

I read.. just various noises that are 'found' on our Planet Earth.
That is what is on the copies of The Golden Discs that are on-board both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2.

I think there should be some Elvis Presley, Beatles and Dolly Parton.
