How "in touch" would you say you are with modern pop culture?

Even though I'm only 27, I must say I'm really out of touch with a lot of things. As in not knowing who certain famous people are, or what they've been up to lately. I guess it's because I don't really keep up to date with movies and tv shows these days and thus don't pay attention to what goes on in the industry. Also, in these days where you no longer have to sit through a one hour daily news show to get all of your news I can just easily go to any news website and ignore 85% of the news articles and just check the ones I'm really interested in.

What about you?

My pop culture status ended around 2005-2006. I know what popular videogames and some movies/TV shows are, but that's about it.

I'm living 15+ years in the past. The fact that 2008 is now 10 years ago and that was the year Metal Gear Solid 4 and Batman: The Dark Knight came out blows my mind,

Well, I wouldn't say I was that much more up to date back then either. But I definitely watched TV back then still and the news.

There's always been a lot of trendy things and famous people that I've managed to avoid knowledge of by accident. Maybe because I tend to focused on certain things and also am not the most social guy out there, meaning I don't really hear certain names or about certain things often. I remember saying sometime ago that John Cena was only in the Marine movies or something and Cure telling me "Jesus are you out of touch". I had no idea had been in several movies and done VA for cartoons until then

I'm pretty in touch, and people who refuse to get out of a certain time period annoy me. I'm always looking forward, never looking back.

The only people I know like that are 50 and older. A ton of middle aged people say they don't see the need to find new things to enjoy since they already have enough things to enjoy themselves already. Also, they tend to think today's music sucks.

Not a whole lot these days. Celebrities and whatnot just aren't usually worth the time to me to be bothered with anymore.

It's to the point that some name is mentioned or some person is a guest on a talk show and I'm like, "Who? He/she is supposed to be famous?" lol I just really could not care less anymore. I've got other more important things to focus on.

I think that a lot of celebrities out there these days are people whose names I know but can't place faces on them.

****ing please. That used to be the joke back in the day, but now all some young people wanna do is live in their childhood. "My childhood!" remarks are prevalent on and off the internet.

And I see the slight irony in saying "back in the day" for what I'm talking about.

Not in touch at all.

Most of the modern singers are completely unknown to me and I periodically discover that some random song that I've heard on the radio is actually world-wide acclaimed hit.

Generally, from examples I've heard, I don't like modern music. Pop is same sugary sweet boring non-sense as ever or boring R'N'B and the rest are indie whiny covers of famous songs and equally whiny solo outings with electronic beat as a background. No rhythm, no fun, no drive, no energy.
That's why my go to Radio station is the one that plays music from the 80-s non-stop.

As for the movies and TV - I know what movies and series are being released, but I don't watch them. I have problems with keeping up with the TV series and I don't like going to cinema. So when people admiring something like "House of Cards" or "Game of Thrones" I have only sub-basic knowledge of any of them.

I also don't know most of the popular actors nowadays. Don't care about gossip and celebrity culture, so quite often I hear about some new guy or gal in Hollywood, only just to discover that they made a sizable carrier in the last few years.

As for the styles...I never was interested in fashion. I dress in what I find comfortable. I don't care about popular colors or whatnot. Partially, because, I am not richy rich to keep up with trends, partially, because, I don't really care about my looks, except for wearing clean clothes.

See, that's why I f#ck with you, Cure. I feel the same way. It weirds me out when people never try anything new or never even expose themselves to anything unfamiliar.

Yeah, same. Even moreso when people take some weird kind of pride in being out of touch.

More or less I guess. I'm usually on whatever is new internet related. I know a few modern celebs and most of them are whoever will be in the next Marvel movie. I know the popular songs but I don't know who sings em. I have 3 fidget spinners, does that count?

For real. Like, I get it, I listen to a lot of the music that I first discovered when I was a youth but if somebody says they can no longer find media that they think is decent and that they want to enjoy then that's a personal failing, not a problem with the current state of entertainment.

The entertainment industry is literally bigger than it ever has been and there is something out there for everyone, you just have to look for it. Even if you don't want to use a service like Spotify or Pandora, simply doing a search on YouTube will help you find any kind of niche genre/scene/lifestyle you could imagine.

SMH I still have friends who just watch the same three shows on Netflix on a loop; I can't f#cking stand it

I guess I can understand why so many older people think today's music sucks. Nowadays it's easier for a song or a video to go viral everywhere due to the internet and social media. Also, many of those older people only know about the most popular and basic modern songs due to the radio and tv. They probably don't know places such as bandcamp to look for new music on.

It's kinda funny, but I think the internet, while making it easier and more accessible for people to watch, read and listen to stuff; it also has made people lazier. Back then it was more of a commitment and required a bigger effort for people to look for new stuff.

I dunno. I don't actively follow current stuff for the most part, but I'm not oblivious to it. The internet tells me about things whether or not I wanna know. Browsing certain sites you're bound to see memes or talk of certain media/slang/people/events. I'm probably more in touch than a lot of people here, but that's still a lot less than normies. Hard to adequately say.

That sounds about right.

In my case, I don't actively search for things.
I learn about most of the modern culture by accident, encountering stuff via some news or radio programs.

But it always was like that though - I have never followed pop-culture on purpose. I have always picked what I was interested in, even if it was some obscure stuff, rather than just latching on what was popular at any given moment.

Coupled with living in a poor family and being rather apathetic towards cultural trends, due to my personal beliefs ("live for yourself, not to show off yourself for anyone else") I kind of grown up to be very picky and easily dismissive of stuff that I don't find amusing and interesting.

Not trendy by any means, but I'm fairly familiar with pop culture just from watching the news, and shows like TMZ (mostly for background noise while doing other things). I know what I like when it comes to music, movies, or shows, and I follow a few favorites but also check out new ones from time to time. I agree that most current media is crap, but that's a matter of taste, and a general feeling that originality and talent have become lazy and lacking. I do occasionally find new music that I like, but it's rare.

I don't know if I've *ever* been up to date with pop culture. I always feel like I'm just catching up with some trend that came out years ago.

You guy's hear of this thing called One Peace? It's apparently about a Loofa Monkey who's irate. Or something. I don't know.

Get off my lawn.
