Tim Hill Writing "The April O'Neil Files" Pilot For Nickelodeon

Quote:
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting the Turtley Awesome news that film director and screenwriter Tim Hill is currently writing the pilot for a brand-new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" project titled "The April O'Neil Files" for Nickelodeon!

It is currently unknown whether "The April O'Neil Files" will be a brand-new TMNT spin-off series or special, or a all-new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie.

Tim Hill's credits includes "Rocko's Modern Life", "KaBlam!", "Action League Now!", "SpongeBob SquarePants", "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie", "Alvin and the Chipmunks", "Hop", "Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever", "Short Circuit", "Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties", "Muppets from Space", "100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd" and "Max Keeble's Big Move"

Could be interesting, I guess it could be a prequel and maybe her mum could be in it.

Let's see.. We are getting a spin off for a secondary character on a TV show that gets more plots and character development than one of the main characters.

But in all seriousness, I'm excited for this

Interesting...! Though I have to wonder what the motivation is. The April & Casey series at IDW is clearly an attempt to pull in more female readers, but it's IMO pretty shallow... So far it's all teenage drama, romance, it's cliches, stuff that I have to assume chick readers never really asked for/wated. I hope this won't be similar in that respect. Chicks are people, & people like all sorts of stuff, not just "chick" stuff, ya know? But I'm jumping the gun, to be fair. It's just curious that she's been given such a push in the now, starring in the new film, getting a lot of spotlight in the cartoon, & her comic mini. Beyond the OT she was never meant to be this integral/important of a character beyond what her role serves to be for the TMNT, an initial link to the human world.

If this is a spin-off of the Nick show itself, then I'm definitely into it, I REALLY like Nick's April. If it's a movie, with Megan Fox, well, I've finally found a good enough reason to end my life.

Its probably another one-off movie/special like the Half-Shell Heroes thing coming in November. Maybe they're going to continually make a whole bunch of spinoff specials.

He also wrote a bunch of great Rocko's Modern Life and SpongeBob episodes.

Hoping it's just a fun little one-off thing like the Half Shell bit. Or just a rare occasional thing as I'm kind of expecting those to end up. Could be cool, but if it's largely Turtleless...meh. April is ok, but never really been into her enough to be that interested in something without the guys.

If they are doing it to pull more girls into watching...then the continued blindness of the actual fanbase demographics - and that TMNT already has many female fans of all ages - is a bit .

Props for insightfulness. Wish the people who actually made it (or those doing the marketing?) understood it.

Huh! On one hand, I'm really, really glad this is a thing that is being considered. On the other hand, there are so many ways this could go wrong, and given the Nick show's dismal record with the character and their selection of developer, I'm not exactly optimistic.

My personal best-case scenario: a live-action series in the vein of kids-oriented Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures. My personal worst case scenario: the current show, exactly, except starring April.

Sarah Jane Adventures was terrible. You'd actually want that?

Yup. I'll be the first to admit having serious issues with the series, but if this April O'Neil project can match or surpass its basic decency, imagination, character- and world-building, and ability to actually carry an emotional beat, then it will be exponentially better and far more worthwhile than the current Nick cartoon.

Eh, not really all that invested in April for a spin-off. Could be interesting though.

Okay.

So, my initial response was full of disapproval for the possible spin-off. Since I have calmed down though, I think I can express my response more clearly.

At first, I didn't know what to think when it came to this announcement. I was mixed with shock, disapproval, and optimism. But after I calmed down, I began to...warm up to it. The art style is really beautiful, and the director must know what he is doing, since he has had experience with making all kinds of shows.

I really hope this project will work out in the end. I really do.

April having force powers that would rival Yoda's is pretty whack

Guys you do realise this is only a pilot and won't be shown to the public (unless it gets leaked), it's only just a test to see if Nick will like it or not. The show might not even happen.

Good Point there. Sort of a relief but I'd still love a rise of Oroku Saki and Karai spin off if ever they were to do one.

Seriously, guys. The art style is not sexualizing April in any way. You guys are just thinking it's sexualized.

Good reminder that even high profile pilots don't always get the green-light to go all the way into production:
