I hear you.

Just gotta apprehend that the first Independence Day happened around that time, and Will Smith was essentially the biggest movie star on the planet.

"Midas Touch" is an understatement.

You would not be shocked to know that I never cared for that one, either.

I've noticed that I don't so much exist within pop culture, so much as "outside of and next to" it.

As for Will Smith, I'm sure he's an extremely nice guy but his work never grabbed me. I mean, he's "fine", but if you've ever seen him give an interview you've seen his entire range.

This reboot seems like a "Harry Met Loyd" situation, where filmmakers try and squeeze a few more drops out of a tired premise despite the person 95% of the audience paid to see not being involved. But they still own the rights, so they're gonna cross their fingers and pray anyways.

Or, perhaps, a "Major League: Back to the Minors" situation. Y'know, whichever.

Ya know just because it’s a comedy doesn’t mean the audience has to find it hilarious from beginning to end. It’s an action movie with a comedic tone.

I’ve seen plenty of comedies that I really enjoyed but did not have laugh fits over. Significant, genuine, laughter can rarely be manufactured. I mean you don’t literally get struck with laughter every time you hear a good joke.

It’s hard to explain but I think people know what I mean.

Sometimes it’s just about enjoying a movie and the strange/silly situations characters get into.

So I've gotten the gist, but never laughed once. I gather that they're supposedly comedies - which I'm generally not a huge fan of, anyway - but they didn't come across as very funny. Mostly just Fresh Prince doing his usual "Oh, HELL naw!" gimmick, but played against Tommy Lee Jones "cranky old white guy" gimmick for maximum contrast. Might've been a funny SNL skit, once upon a time, but I'unno if we needed a whole movie, let alone three or four-ish. Premise seems thin.
Nail on the head. But I disagree on that last bit... the premise was golden. Fish out of water hood-ish guy being introduced to a super secret organization? We've seen this play out expertly in other, far better movies. Look at Kingsman 1. And that didn't even have aliens. And was far funnier.

It's all at a script level, the problems.

I like the first and third MIB movies.
First one is really good and funny, thanks for the chemistry between Smith and Jones, third is funny, though it feels really short.
Second movie, though is retreat of the first and had never grabbed me.

Looks like a half-assed cash-in that looks like a remake disguised as a spin-off/sequel.

I didn't even know there had been a Trailer #1 released yet, anywho I can't say I'm excited but it very much looks like MIB only without Will Smith.

Here's my pitch for the paragraph program summary for the future TV reruns:

"Not-Thor and Not-Valkyrie team-up again under new aliases to bring order to Earth's secret infiltration of alien beings! Mischievous hijinks will ensue with hilarity!" [Vague references to the fact that you associate this series entirely with Will Smith will undoubtedly be included.]

There's cameos from a few old characters, but not them

Tessa Thompson really wanted to change the name. Because inclusivity.

And if it was Women in Black?

Or would it be like this: Superperson, Batperson, but Batwoman and Supergirl, right?

lol... how true.

MIB: International bombing harder than Dark Phoenix:

http://epicstream.com/news/BayaniMig...3fR31wMvt8_UwI

Also more gems from Tessa Thompson:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/he...ne-set-1218417

"We get to play buddies on a mission together, and we get to do that inside of a male/female pairing where we are equals in terms of screen time, agency and how much we mean to the plot. I think that’s really rare in terms of Hollywood films, unfortunately."

"Also, just having to take up space in a way that as a performer I haven’t, and frankly, as a woman I haven’t — inside of male-dominated spaces — and having to really do that."

"What I love about what we get to do is talk about millennial love and how that looks different inside of new ideas around family and partnership. "

"I mean the modern sensibility now, and the time that we’re in, would allow for a woman like me to topline a studio film like this, and I think that’s impactful."

At this point, the dead horses killed by lead actresses promoting their films and talking about how powerful they are and how far we've come could supply a glue factory for the next decade.

Please. Stop talking about it. I get it. I support it. I'm in your corner. Just give me good movies, and stop talking about it.

I don't remember Charlize Theron going on and on about this with Atomic Blonde. Or Gal Gadot with Wonder Woman.

Most actors can’t talk about anything, politics or not, in an unscripted way without sounding kinda dumb/annoying

There’s a reason they’re actors and not writers
