The Academy to postpone the Popular Film Category

The Academy has decided to postpone the new popular film category at the next Oscars. They need time to figure out how they can nominate films in this category. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/ne...source=twitter

Theres no need for a "most popular" category in an award show.

Yes. There is no achievement in "popularity."

It's a way to give an award to movies that are popular and people like them but aren't really noteworthy in any other category, i.e. Marvel movies. It's being done so they can get a younger and different audience to watch their awards ceremonies. Because there is no way to actually judge a movie in this way they need more time to come up with a way to be as legit as they can with this pointless award.

The fact is popularity doesn't depend on good quality. Sometimes it just depends on how much you spend to promote your movie, or how much you've spent to have a popular actor in it. Giving an award for that is just silly.
Of course there are low budget projects that somehow manage to become popular but that rarely happens.

Like, a little back in the day, "Twilight" would clearly win "Most Popular." Not by the merit of the writing, acting, or really... anything.

Isn't money enough of a reward? Studios will just find a way to mess with the voting so they can slap an Oscar on the DVD case of whatever sh*thouse Spiderman movie is out.
