Triceratons breathing oxygen or nitrogen?

What's the point with the Triceratons in some versions breathing oxygen, and in some versions nitrogen? (more than the turtles having to use tanks if the Triceratons breath oxygen)

Even if we don't know much about the original Triceraton home-planet since it has usually been destroyed, it's excepted to have been Earth-like but never colliding with any comet, allowing dinosaur-like creatures to evolve. So wouldn't oxygen make more sense?

It's a nitrogen/sulfur mix to be more precise. They simply evolved in an atmosphere with that mixture, I'm not sure why you assume their homeworld had to be anything like earth, their dinosaur-like apperance just seems to be a coincidence.

And in what version exactly did they breath oxygen?

I had to watch the episode again to make sure, thank god for Youtube's speed function, and they never state what they breathe so they could just use some unseen breating aid. Regardless, I wouldn't take any details in the Fred Wolf show seriously, the episode had them fooled into leaving earth by animatronic dinosaurs and a laser.

Speaking of the speed function, watching the show in 1.5 or 2.0 speed is just bizarre. The sound is clearly too fast but the animation itself becomes smooth and almost appears to move at a more realistic pace. Like speeding up a slow-motion scene...
What's somehow even weirder, the pacing of the story actually seemed a lot more attuned to a 10-13 minute runtime.

Because of it was, it would've allowed us to think: Maybe creatures like those woul'dve dominated Earth if it hadn't collided with that comet 65 millions of years earlier?

Maybe we're getting a bit off-topic here but the Triceratons are aliens, they didn't necessarily evolve from Triceratops-like aliens. For all we know the humanoid shape came before the dinosaur-like details, which actually seems more likely.

See here's the thing, this is a velociraptor skeleton:

Here's a chicken skeleton:

While chickens did not evolve from velociraptors, they did evolve from something similar. As you can see, the main differences are no tail, fused fingers and no teeth. Now here's a comparison of triceratops and human:

A lot harder to get from point A to B on this one. There's really no reason to think any changes to Tricaratops would cause such a massive transformation, better to imagine them evolving into something that resembles it better in posture.

As for the Triceratons? I imagine them having scaly monkey-like ancestors with horns. Like a lemur in the skin of a Jackson Chameleon.

That's an interesting theory but there is at least ONE version where they evolved on Earth- IDW. It's not even hard to imagine that they could have done so in other versions as well, but so long ago that their original home world was long forgotten and they believed they were from whatever world their ancestors migrated to before the comet hit Earth. (Like the Voyager episode with the dino-race evolved from hadrosaurs that was discovered living in a vast city-ship by Voyager's crew. )

Also the ancestors of all birds WAS a theropod, which Velocirapters are a type of.

I guess the IDW tried to give them a new origin for the IDW universe, so I see no point of having them from Earth in other versions.

Well...still kind of "no" on "evolving" on Earth in IDW. Their origins certainly came from Earth, but it doesn't look like they evolved. It seemed more like they were made artificially, based on what was taken by a single female Triceratops on Earth, and with build inspired by what Churk saw in the turtles.
They're basically mutants. We just don't know how the Utroms grew them.

I'd like to think the Utroms engineered them from multiple different species and that just really liked the skull structure of the Triceratops.

A little Triceratops here, a little D'Hoonibinan there, a little of themselves for loyalty, etc. You get the point.

I think they're alll great as independent species.

No wonder they rebelled . It's straight out of Frankenstein.

Yep, that makes more sense than just dismissing the episode outright.

"Night of the Dark Turtle" says nothing about their home-planet.
