What...

Raises so many questions. Does he want it for the U.S. or mostly for himself? While the former is assumed, it never really says either way. Already wants to act picky about legal immigrants, but, hey, lets just basically buy 55k people.

Would there be an individual vetting process and he'd deport them off the island if they don't measure up? And has he considered that we already have plenty of states that collectively require a lot of tax dollars to deal with winter, without needing to add an island that for a good chunk of the year is basically made of winter?

The reactions of the citizens though... “Oh please God no”...

Northwest passage, huge resources, oil, zinc, iron... makes very, very good sense. It worked out well for the US when it bought Alaska. Greenland would be a good purchase. There's no harm in exploring the idea, I think.

Greenland is not as massive as it looks in mercator maps where it's nearly as big as Africa. So no, Russia would still be bigger.

Anyway, Greenland belongs to Denmark, technically. So better consult the Danish politicians first before making a purchase.

Also, Greenland has the highest suicide rates in the world BY FAR. Do you really want to own a place like that?
