According to Emily Blunt, the character in this film will be much closer to the P.L. Travers' original series than the version Julie Andrews played in the film.

Quote:
“I feel a little more trepidation with this [character] because she’s so emblematic of people’s nostalgia,” Blunt says. “It’s such an important character in people’s childhood.”

While Andrews’ version of the magical nanny was sweet but firm, Blunt says her Mary Poppins will be slightly different — closer to the character from P.L. Travers’ original series. “We’re delving into the books a lot more,” she explains, “which is a different version of the character, I’ll say that much.” When she’s reminded that book Poppins is slightly tougher than fans of the 1964 film might expect, Blunt gives a coy smile: “She’s a little meaner, yeah.”
She also shared the reaction Julie Andrews had when she learned the news that Blunt had been cast in the role.

Quote:
Blunt hadn’t yet spoken to Andrews when she sat down with EW in early August, but Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall had — and he relayed the experience to her. “Rob said he was in the Hamptons, and he saw [Andrews], and he said, ‘It’s top secret, but Emily Blunt’s playing Mary Poppins,’” Blunt recalls. “And she went, ‘Oh, wonderful!’”

“I felt like I wanted to cry,” she says. “It was lovely to get her stamp of approval. That took the edge off it, for sure.”

The film has found its Jane Banks. She will be portrayed by Emily Mortimer.

This sounds like it will be really cool. I definitely can't wait to see how this all turns out.

The thing with this is that at least there is plenty of source material to adapt still. So I'm okay with a "Mary Poppins 2."

Dick Van Dyke confirmed that he will appear in the film. He also said that Angela Lasnbury has joined the cast.

A few months ago, Colin Firth had been cast as the President of the bank where Jane and Michael's father, George Banks, worked at.

Production has officially begun. It was also revealed that Dick Van Dyke will be playing Mr. Dawes Jr., the chairman of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank. Julie Walters (Harry Potter) has also joined the cast and the film will introduce three new Banks children, played by Pixie Davies (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children), Nathanael Saleh (Game of Thrones) and newcomer Joel Dawson.

Yeah no kidding. Julie Andrews is 81, which is ten years younger than Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury.

Speaking of Lansbury, she's going to be playing the Balloon Lady, which is a character from the book series.

Man, now all the kids who watched Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will understand that "Mary Poppin's" joke. I bet 95% of the kids who watched that movie have no idea who Mary Poppin's is.

Mary Poppins is pop culture, everyone knows who she is since its parodied all the time. I never saw the original film either, I mean it came out in 1964 and yet I knew who she was because of parodies and understood jokes about it. It's likely easier now for kids to know who Mary Poppins is since you can find the movie much easier now than in the past.

Julie Andrews won't be appearing in the film. That's too bad. However, I can understand the reason why she won't be in it.

Quote:
Marshall recognizes that Andrews’ endorsement is a hot topic, but he insists that the 81-year-old legend is “one thousand percent” in support of the film. “Julie will always be, for me and for everybody, the most astonishing performance as Mary Poppins, winning the Oscar and bursting onto the scene so brilliantly,” he says. “But Emily is the perfect person to carry the torch, and I know Julie feels the exact same way. She loves her.”

So much so, in fact, that Andrews decided not to appear in the sequel out of respect to Blunt. (Van Dyke, on the other hand, does make a cameo — but no, not as Bert.)

Marshall explains, “Julie was incredibly gracious, and we talked about it in a very general way but she made it clear right up front. She said, ‘This is Emily’s show, and I really want it to be Emily’s show. I don’t want it to be, “Oh, here comes that Mary Poppins.” I don’t want that. I really want her to take this and run with it, because she will be brilliant.’”

Say what you will about Hollywood, but it’s a town of relationships that can turn the tide on any project — and Marshall’s involvement in Mary Poppins Returns is case in point for convincing Andrews that her legacy was in good hands. “She said it’s time and she said, ‘I know it’ll be cared for,’” says Marshall. “And that’s the thing I think about every day when I’m at work. We all do.”

This really does look like aRob Marshall film. I know that people had mixed opinions about Into the Woods, but I really enjoyed that film and it appears that this movie has that kind of feel to it as well. While I was watching it I had some great memories from my childhood.
