Hence the rebranding, but Barbie was directly inspired by the Lilli doll.
Who invented the Barbie doll and why? (howstuffworks.com)

Quote:
But when an American woman named Ruth Handler spied a Lilli doll in a store while vacationing in Switzerland, she didn't see it as a prurient novelty. Instead, she thought it would be the perfect toy for her daughter, Barbara. Handler had observed Barbara and her girlfriends playing with paper dolls that depicted teenage girls or adult women. To Handler, that was their way of practicing for adulthood. Yet, aside from the two-dimensional paper dolls, no other dolls available in stores portrayed the mature female body. For that reason, she bought two Lilli dolls for Barbara during that Switzerland trip in 1956 -- and one for herself.
Ruth Handler was one of the co-founders of Mattel.

Quote:
Ruth Handler planned to tap into that emerging kid consumerism with the extra Lilli doll she brought back stateside. With Lilli as her muse, Handler convinced her husband and the all-male design team at Mattel to follow her lead in filling the empty market niche for a more mature female doll. Mattel began crafting Handler's dream doll by 1957. They kept Lilli's general figure but scrubbed off some of her makeup, relaxed her smile and used soft vinyl instead of hard plastic to construct her.

Yeah, I know. Barbie was ripped off from Bild Lilli.
By "male sex toy origin" you make it seem like Barbie's appeal to young girls was a mistake rather than the point.

I would consider the point to be a mistake.

The appeal wasn't a mistake. That was classing marketing.
The fact that they marketed a toy made for men to little girls as something the little girls should aspire to be, was a mistake.

It's gross.

It's a bit of an unattractive evolution, yeah. But the appeal wasn't in the figure of the doll itself, the appeal was in the professions and things that this (wo)man for all seasons could do.

Y'know who I would cast Amy for? Live-action Pam Poovey. She'd rock that role.

This is like making a G.I. Joe movie about pacifism.

as mentioned on Rangerboard, if it can have the same quality as Barbie's life in the dreamhouse, count me in, that sh!t is hilarious

They are pretty generic little girl' film, only Dreamhouse is the only thing of value.

Well, it now appears development has shifted from Sony to Warner Bros.

During the course of the film's stay at Sony, Schumer departed and Ann Hathaway was put in the frame, but she also departed.

WB are apparently keen on getting Margot Robbie involved

Now THERE'S a Barbie. And I mean that as a compliment.

Still waiting on Amy Schumer to be cast as Pam Poovey for the live-action Archer movie...

Would she come with Johnny Depp Ken, with a gallon of bourbon and spring-loaded kicking action?

I guess my joke was too subtle.

"Johnny Depp kicked Amber Heard in the stomach, and some people don't care about it because he has pouty lips and high cheekbones."

...Meh. Was funnier before.

..........I'm vamping to cover the fact that I have no idea who the guy you mentioned is.
