Same here.... Ramona and Fudge were the first 'real books' I started reading as a kid. It blew my mind back then when the characters would crossover in each others' books, and my mom always got a kick out of the fact that Fudge's dog was named Turtle.
May she rest in peace. Dang, if my mom was still alive, she would have at least recognized the books if I told her about this.

My son really likes her books. Shocked she was over 100. Lived a long and successful life.

Sad, but wow, 104?? Not sure I read the other ones, but I definitely had and enjoyed some of the Ramona books as a kid.

If she can make it to 104, then *I* will make it to 104.

Not if she wasn't your (great?) grandma and you follow her lifestyle.

We've got a fair number of centenarians around, Norman Lloyd is 106, Nehemiah Persoff is 101, Marilyn Monroe's half-sister Berniece Baker Miracle is 101. Vanna White had an aunt that lived to 112, she might have a chance. Betty White might be next year, so might Patricia Wright (Three Stooges: Cuckoo On A Choo-Choo) this year.

112... We should all be so lucky. Provided the quality of life is worth it.
I did have a relative who made it to 104...but unfortunately, she was a step-great-grandmother and no blood relation. Too bad you can't adopt longevity. Last edited by IndigoErth; 03-27-2021 at 09:59 PM. |

My great-grandma made it to about 104 or 105. Her daughter/my Grandma made it to about 97 I think.
Then my Dad went and dropped off at 65. What a crap deal! So it seems like it could go either way for me, and I don't expect anything so I won't be disappointed. BUT, I figure if I can avoid my Dad's many mistakes I should have a decent shot at the higher-end. Fingers crossed!

RIP, Ms. Cleary. I really enjoyed your books as a kid.
Well, except for Dear Mr. Henshaw. I've never much liked journal- or letter-based stories.

I was just talking about her sometime last week and was telling a friend that she was one of my favorite authors as a kid and that she was still alive and how surprised I was over it. RIP Miss Cleary, who made reading so much fun for me and one of my favorite childhood books (aside from the Ramona series that I read back in the 80s and early 90s [used to watch the show too] and of course the series about Henry Huggins), Dear Mr. Henshaw, which I did my 5th grade book report on. One book series that come to mind that I never read back then was Fudge and Super Fudge, which was by Judy Blume (another fav childhood author), but I did used to watch the Saturday morning show on ABC.Every single title here, I've read. I was a big Cleary fan when in elementary school.

I honestly read a lot more Judy Blume books as a kid, mostly ones I inherited from my sister after she outgrew them. That's where most of my books came from as a kid, so I'm guessing that she was more of a Judy Blume fan than a Beverly Cleary fan.
They had us read some of the Ramona books when I was in like second or third grade, but that's about it. And I think even then it was only the first couple of them.
