Speaking from personal experience, you can refuse to forgive someone for something, without it "owning" you. Like, you can put it aside without forgiving the wrong, and just ignore or avoid the person when possible, while being civil but aloof when you have to deal with them. It's a matter of how you choose to view and interact with them. As an example, if a family member was once abusive, but you still have to be around them, you can interact with that person in a normal manner when neccessary, and even pretend it never happend around others, without actually forgiving them. IE, be mindful of the past and distance yourself, without dwelling on it unnecessarily. I think it boils down to realizing that they were to blame, but unless and until they are willing to admit to the wrong and that they understand this, there is no reason one should forgive them.
