Here's how the film was able to avoid the sequel curse, which affects the box-office, according to the folks at Variety.

I loved the movie and enjoyed a lot of references and whatnot. Some stuff might be 'dated' for the kids of today, but for those of us that lived while the internet was growing to what it became today, it was fun. I especially liked the montage of Ralph making viral videos, I mean, I've had co-workers nudge me and tell me 'yo have you see this funny video?' so I can relate to that. And I like that the movie remember that Ralph is a pre-existing videogame character from a retro arcade, so I think part of the reason that his videos became viral weren't so much because it was the same old thing, but because it was a beloved videogame character from their childhood somehow popping up in viral videos.
The only thing that got me was the ending, because while it does make sense with real people, it's kinda weird when it's happening to videogame characters. I'm not spoiling the ending here, but for those that saw it should know what I mean, especially after the fixed the Sugar Rush arcade.

The biggest issue I have with the movie is the ending.
