I wore the tape out of Aladdin as a kid. It's up there with Toy Story as my top favorite Disney films. That being said, I've got mixed emotions about this one.
I'll probably just bootleg it one day when I'm bored.

Why was recasting Iago even an option? Gottfried is literally too iconic not to voice him.

Now I have to admit, that is absolutely beautifully made.

Shredder and Krang combined had the biggest arsenal of any villains in all of the cartoons.

Disney has released four new posters. One of them gives us a better look at Iago.

Box Office Pro predicts the film will have a three-day weekend debut of $85 million and end its run at the North American box-office with $235 million. If their prediction is accurate that toal wouldn't be as much as Beauty and the Beast or The Jungle Book, but it would still pretty respectable gross like the amount of money Maleficent made.

Now that Dumbo has grossed only $100 million in North America and just over $300 million worldwide against a budget of $170 million, Forbes believes that there is a lot more pressure on Aladdin to perform well at the box-office.

Quote:
Walt Disney’s Dumbo earned $7.05 million (-25%) in its fourth weekend for a $101.5 million 24-day domestic cume. This one is still a big miss (even as it tops $300 million global) thanks to a $170 million budget, and now there’s more pressure on Aladdin than there otherwise would have been even as Avengers: Endgame prepares to crush all comers.
Box Office: 'Hellboy' Plunges 68% As 'Dumbo' Tops $300 Million

Funny how they wrote this after saying that this movie and The Lion King should be fine since a lot of people grew up with those films in the 90's.

Quote:
You can talk all you want about folks getting tired of Walt Disney live-action fairy tale flicks, or the notion that not all of these properties generate equal excitement. But the bigger issue, relatively speaking (Mary Poppins Returns DID clear $171 million domestic) is that the Mouse House seems to be taking these properties and reshaping them into essentially the same movie over and over again. That’s a simplification, but that’s arguably how it looks from a general audience point-of-view. The good news is that I don’t think that will be an issue with their live-action remakes of Aladdin, The Lion King or (eventually) Mulan. More importantly, audiences actually want to see live-action redos of those mid-1990s Disney toons, while Dumbo always came off as a “Well, Dumbo was also a Disney movie that people remember.”

Entertainment Weekly sat down with Naomi Scott about Jasmine's new wardrobe for the film. Here are some photos from the article:

Aladdin star Naomi Scott breaks down Princess Jasmine's revamped turquoise outfit and whole new wardrobe

Is Jasmine's handmaid going to be like Noreen from The Brady Bunch Movie or LeFou from live-action Beauty and the Beast film by making her have a secret affection for someone and then not get it?

In less than two weeks, the film will be hitting the big screen. Three more TV spots have been released.

There's also this featurette.

I know I made a public vow to not support Live Action Disney remakes, but I actually like whats being done here.

Will Smith looks like he's having a lot of fun as do the other actors in the tv spots, and the sets are pretty colourful.

Easily the most "animated" looking remake that is also mostly focusing on real life human actors rather than mixing a lot with CG creatures or being purely CG animated like the Lion King.

I will still resist the urge to watch this, but if I end up giving i, I won't also watch The Lion King (that trailer left a sour taste in my mouth, unlike this.)

Frank Welker confirmed from 10:00 to 11:10 of this video that he is indeed reprising his role as the Cave of Wonders in this movie.

Today Disney released a new TV spot along with another look at Jasmine's new song "Speechless".

58% rotten on Rotten tomatoes

Critics Consensus

Aladdin retells its classic source material's story with sufficient spectacle and skill, even if it never approaches the dazzling splendor of the animated original.

By the way, I've seen the movie.

It's essentially the same as the 1992 version except the first act is compressed to "flesh out" the rest of the movie, there's some feminist message about Jasmine not keeping quiet/deserving to be the sultan, some backstory/motives for Jafar, the Genie having a love interest (also explicitly becoming human when freed) and Iago being more like a dumb animal. It's also about as cheap looking and lacking in energy as the trailers make it out to be.
