I read somewhere that somehow Gunn was totally unaware that Marvel didn't own the rights to Ego until relatively late in production. Getting the permissions to use the character was a very lucky twist of fate. So maybe if things had gone differently J' Son would have been a last resort.

Gunn hates J'Son so he wouldn't have used him as the backup. Probably would've gone with another Elder. Thankfully it wasn't an issue,

That sucks. I wonder if it had to do with Chris going from nothing when he met Anna to an in demand film actor. They seemed happy.

Watched it, loved it. Really, really good. Loved the first one but found this to be even better, minus the borderline obnoxious amount of "jokes", which were really just crass words like "turd" being thrown around unfunnily.

I agree with almost all of what you said but most especially this part.

Overall though, fantastic film. Amazing visuals, great characters/performances, lots of fun. Not a Marvel movie guy at all, but this series rules.

On a different note, watching both of them makes me feel so bad about TMNT. Their movies could be as good as these, in the right hands. You've got the playful humor, emotional weight, lots of romping about, adoptive family themes, space/extra dimensional stuff, rogues galleries, all done perfectly. When Yondu & the gang were walking through the barracks of that ship & bodies were dropping like flies from his arrow wizzing around, it made me think "Damn, a scene like this with the turtles would be insanely cool, just switch the arrow with ninja stars" as an example.

Maybe after James Gunn gets finished with his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, something will convince him to give the TMNT a cinematic go... 'twould be glorious.

It pisses me off we can't have a TMNT movie like this, where an epic opening scene that shows them taking on some big random enemy & making quick work of it is played as just another day in the life. Not peddling the same story over & over but diving in to the madness up front, establishing that the team has already been doing crazy stuff for a while now, it's a lifestyle. I mean, you could straight up switch the GOTG characters in that part with the 4 turtles, & the beast with a big robot or something. Mikey fussing with the boom box, Raph diving inside the thing, Leo & Don arguing over the approach, etc. Those planet jumping segments that show little easter eggs of other planets could be done in a turtley way that gives glimpses at Utroms & Triceratons. Deep interpersonal sub-plots about a vulnerability/insecurity/togetherness. A gimmick that works in 80's/90's jams, even. So much of their formula would make for the best damn ninja turtle movie ever. *sigh* Yeah, Gunn would kill it, I think.

Sorry for going off topic, but what it all boils down to is that this series is super dope & makes me want other comic book films to step it up. Granted I say that having never even seen the cover of a GOTG comic in my life, so I can't speak to whether or not it holds true to the source material.

Funny enough, the GOTG movies are the farthest thing from the comics. Of course, this has changed since the first movie came out, but Gunn really brought his own vision.

Yeah, he takes a lot from the Abnett/Lanning run, but also takes many liberties. Obviously the whole Walkman thing and the music obsession was not from the books.

Which was the best run to take from IMO, even if I wish they kept Star Lord's military costume. I'm glad Gunn decided to do what he want though. For as good as the DnA run is, another "serious" toned movie would've done nothing for Marvel. The GOTG movies are so good and really stand out from the typical mcu fare.

So the meaningful death toll in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is under a handful thanks to Loki having nine lives. That being the case Marvel decided to sneak one in just to add to the total it seems. Retcon?

No, pretty sure it got mentioned in the run up to Guardians 2, as I already recalled Gunn saying that this Groot isn't the same as the old Groot.
