As long as its not some super popular character, I hope it'll be fine.
Besides, I agree with Andrew - most likely some of those characters will end up playable, if NRS will keep their promise and will support MK1 for as long as possible.

According to early plans for vanilla MK3 Cyrax was supposed to be cyberScorpion, but developers nixed that idea.
Gameplay-wise the closest analogue to Scorpion in this game is Smoke.

They also tried to turn Sub-Zero into a cyborg but to no avail. Honestly, Scorpion and Sub-Zero are the two most popular characters of the series, so it wouldn't be a good idea to change their character designs.

Smoke... first time I remember trying to unlock a video game character.

We'll probably get -- finally -- a playable version of that dude from the last movie now. Assuming he's even in the sequel. I'm assuming he is.

It looks like a whole new world/continuity where Sub-Zero and Scorpion as well as Kitana and Mileena get along.

Honestly though, I would have gone balls to the wall with this concept until some mcguffin somehow brings things back to normal. Like... bring in all new villains. If Liu Kang wanted to recreate the world in an era of peace, he would have made it so Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn were never even born. And why the hell would Mileena still have the Tarkatan teeth? Make her beautiful like she always wanted.

I would have made new villains and new characters based on different events. Like what if Frost wasn't a bitch and trained under Scorpion instead (I guess she'd need a new code-name). Or what if Jax and Sonya hooked up instead and had a different child?

In 2021.
But it was quite devisive. While not Annihilation tier trash, it still was not up to quality of the OG movie.

Besides, it had added OG protagonist who wasn't present in games - Cole. I personally hope, since divisive reception of the movie, he won't be transplanted into games. They already have plenty of characters to choose from.

Besides, in a movie universe he is descendant of a Scorpion. Not that it stopped Takeda being in game, though canonicity of DLC characters is always under question.

I feel like they won't bring it to normal - they went too far with this concept and returning stuff to normal, would mean effectively ANOTHER reboot and I have a feeling even for NRS it will be too much.

On the other hand, their writers completely embody all possible negative traits of comic books of modern era: they think that every story should have shocking deaths and grand battles for the sake of existence. So who knows?

I'm sure the Mortal Kombat games have been great for years, but for me the whole thing sort of peaked with MK 3. That was a true thing of cultural excitement. I played a little MK4 - it was neat, but MK 3 is where the series peaked for me.

Same thing with Street Fighter III.

It looks neat! But for my part in it, I can't see myself ever getting into a fighting game ever again in my life. I was there as a kid at the start - and for the Street Fighter II mania that came with it in arcades.

I can't even bring myself to turn on my PS4 and sit there playing anything anymore, let alone somehow learning all of the inputs and controls for even 1/4 of those characters in that game....

I think it's safe to say that I've walked away from gaming almost completely. The kids can have it.

Looks good, stylistically brighter and more fun than MK11. Kameo system looks promising and basically replaces Variations, without dividing characters into pieces. They also brought back regular meter and Breakers, though they are part of Kameo system, it seems. Arenas looks even better.

However, speed of a gameplay reminds me too much of MK11 and it will be pretty bad, if it is still the case.

Wasn't MK11's roster literally modeled after real people? And literally Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung?

WTF are you smoking?
Not only this accusation is ridiculous, but as Andrew has said, characters were modeled after real people, so I guess, they are "ugly stereotypes" as well?

Are you one of those people who goes on about "stereotypes" and "social Justice" while not having a social life or actually knowing any real people?

This game modeled it's characters after real people, dude. Your own racism is coming out - you have to do better. Racist.

So it's been out for a while now. Is anybody really playing it? Is it much better than 11 to justify itself?

My joypad is broken for some time and I can't play online without VPN, since WB blocked multiplayer servers for Russia. And even with VPN most of the time I can't find opponents, so...I wasn't playing it since October.

But the game itself is good, much better gameplay-wise than MK11. If only movement speed of characters was a bit better.

As for the singleplayer stuff - there is an Invasion mode, but those are basically endless fights with simple opponents with some modifications. So it becomes pretty boring pretty soon.

Does anything noteworthy happen in the standard, single-player arcade type story modes?

As in endings?
I don't know, maybe someone else does. I have completed Arcade only ones.

I started downloading it last night but it was taking too long so I went to bed. I'm still not really convinced there's enough "new" here vs. Mortal Kombat 11. And obviously there's no Robocop, Rambo or Terminator. The only amusing addition is Homelander, but that's not enough, compared with what they gave us in previous games.

Spoiler:
And it sounds like the ending, Liu Kang wipes out the Shang Tsung from the previous timeline, then wipes out that timeline completely. So I guess it's just the MK1 timeline now, and no more timeline dickery.
